Thanks arby. I picked up a few VCs (VC-02) from a vendor link. Will I need to cut the red wire and then solder to the 2 pins? Any other method that can be used besides soldering? Sorry for the stupid questions but this is my first attempt at this... Thanks again.

Well I think we'll pass on the cotton. I guess I will check out the radio shack and pick up the stuff I need. Thanks very much Arby.

Thanks again Arby. I ended up getting a small soldering kit. Bing bang 20 mins and a few burns to my fingers later I have 2 volume controls installed on my Vicky. All in all not too hard... Still messing with the levels. Can't seem to get the left one working well. Its either very low or the slightest adjustment bumps it up to regular (blaring) levels... The right one works just great. Any thoughts?

And thanks one more time. I ended up swapping it out with another (since I'm a soldering pro now... ) and it works great. Now to see if I can hit a fever and make some sweet sweet music!

If you over heated the control soldering it you could have burnt it.

Very possible. It took me a bit on it and it was at a weird angle. Thanks!

Just a hint, tin the leads and wire first then connect the dots quickly.

Yeah, I had a ticket on the other board open about burned out volume controllers. I think slothappy is right, you can damage the pots when soldering. I ran into a couple flaky ones myself and thought that could be the problem, so I lowered the temp on my soldering iron (I had it up over 700 degrees). I was very careful to solder as quickly as possible and haven't had any probs.

Depending on the gauge wire you are working with, the hole in the board may be a little too big, leaving a significant air gap between the wire and the "pad" on the board. Since the holes are not plated through you sometimes can have trouble getting a good solder joint as the solder tends to wick to either the wire or the board, not bridging gap. If you fiddle around trying to get the solder to flow correctly, you're probably heating that pot too long.

The best way around this is to put the wire through the hole and bend it down so it's resting along the pad, as opposed to sitting perpendicular to the board. That way you can get good flow between the pre-tinned wire and pad quickly.
