Most vendors don't import containers, shipping is high on single machines, plus VAT is out of sight

because the uk has some real stupid laws one of them being that if you buy somthing from japan or another country not only do you pay VAT on the item but you have to pay VAT on the shipping (found out the hard way ) so even if you ship by container you get slapped hard by customes
My rice krispies told me to do it

I think that VAT will kill business someday in the UK.

It is like sales tax here

You guys in the UK need to have a little "tea party" of your own... as in Boston.
Then start up your own little country.
Just realize that in 200 years, you'll be way overtaxed again.

And, just think about who gets all that money that you pay for things via the VAT... just think about it.

Dunno if this is relavent or not, but I remember reading something about what Steve from 777heaven said something about a new law with imported electronics had to be certified by some government official and in order to make a profit he would have to order over 100 of the same title and raise the price that he sold it for....

That would be ROHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances), which means that anything imported into europe has to be certified as free from certain chemicals. This includes lead, which is usually present in the solder on most circuit boards. You don't have to have it inspected by a government official, but you do need to have documentation to prove it, in case the government asks for it.

I would expect that most pachinkos/pachislos would not conform to this. For example the part numbers of the LCD displays used in pachis that I have looked at are not the ROHS approved ones (but my newest machine is Cutie Honey which predates the ROHS laws).

The good news is that personal imports of items do not need to conform to ROHS. But once it's within the EU, then it cannot be resold (whether personal or business!)

There's also exemptions for spare parts and sub-assemblies (even if the parts are used for 'upgrades'), so it would be legal for a business to sell a replacement cell (or even sell the frame seperately), but it would be frowned upon if a whole machine was sold as a ready assembled collection of sub-assemblies.

That's my understanding of the regulations, but of course the usual disclaimers apply. I'm not a lawyer, and you should verify this interpretation of the law for yourself before relying on it...

I had been watching samuraislot's little flood of "Indianan" Jones with no reserve auctions lately. I threw up a sport bid before bed, doubting that I'd win. Well I got it for $145! Pretty good price I think and now I have a Lumina case too!! Time to start looking for cells....well after I figure out how I'm going to sneak this one into the house.

True, if only Indy didn't come in that gigantic box that UPS leaves at the house. That thing isn't sneaking anywhere. And since I'm never the first one home in the evenings, I can't smuggle the box down to my gameroom unnoticed. But for an Indy at that price, I guess I can take the , , and .
