Go to the control panel and at the bottom, click on 'users'. check to see if there is a guest user. (default in Windows XP) if there is, you can disable it. and reboot as administrator. ****CHECK TO SEE IF THERE IS AN ADMIN PASSWORD! IF THERE IS, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GET BACK IN UNLESS YOU KNOW THAT PASSWORD****

    I hope this helps.

This is what I found online for an answer to you problem:
    Question...

"i cannot run regedit 'cos it's been disabled by 'adm'.
this's only a home network. i need to check the Run folder
    in the Registry for virus.
how do i enable it. "

    Answer...

"Open Notepad pad, copy paste the following text to the
    note pad

    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
    n\Policies\System]
    "DisableRegistryTools"=dword:00000000

Save the text file as any name u with extension .reg
    example:- "enable.reg"
After that double click to run the file."

I have not tried this, but it is something I would try.

The next thing I would try is to put the file in the start up folder. It may fix the problem during boot up if the regedit is being blocked by a virus.

If you google the problem, You can find a lot of other people with this problem and several different possible solutions.

P.S. How about adding a user with full admin rights, then sign in under that user and get into the regedit?

It could be that the only account you see is not an administrator account.
If you boot the machine in safe mode, you will have the choice to log in as administrator.

This is my personal opinion, or of the voices in my head, and are not meant to reflect the opinion of this board.

Unless somebody renamed or deleted it, you should be able to see a default "administrator" user if you first reboot the PC into Safe Mode and then go to the users control panel. Try to log in as "administrator" and see what happens.

As mentioned, a virus can prevent you from getting to msconfig and to regedit. Been there, done that.

You might try running one of the virus cleaners out there. Chances are you can get this cleaned up without a reformat. Here is a link for Vcleaner:

If you haven't yet done so, try these two programs:

    Download Ad-AwareSE

    Download SpyBot

Were you able to log in as "administrator in Safe Mode? (Did the administrator "user" show up at login?) If that user appears, try logging in with no password.

Oops, you could have saved all your favorite links before you started the reinstall along with other stuff. Hope it's not too painful for you to get it back where you want it.
