Here's one of the few sites that dont charge you for the info. It will direct you to your states treasury website. Quite interesting. Click "Find Property"

Go out there and get your money, and check back often.

I checked the CA page from work earlier in the year and checked several of the people in the cubes around me, One co-worker filed for almost $3000, another for $75. The one with the $75 called today to tell me the check was there when he got home tonight. During the same search I found $1200 for my Mom. Check back a couple times a year as the states update the pages as they get new property in.

It's your money and at least in CA it's not alot of trouble for under $1000
Over $1000 and you need to get the request notarized but for $1000 I can spend a few minutes at the notary.

Yes, you should be able to find out how much online - but this does vary by state. If not you should be able to get an idea and then submit a form that will detail the amount and who the state received it from. Companies must regularly review their accounts and turn over to the state any amounts that are owed to an individual - this includes checks that were issued but never cleared the bank. Of course, there is a long process of due diligence that must be followed prior to sending the funds to the state which includes exhausting all possibilities of contacting the person owed the money.

    Good luck finding your money!

Does anyone know of any sites that will give you an estimate of what is owed?

Here is the link for New York http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/

Do a search for "unclaimed money [your state here]" and you should be able to find the state site. Be careful to not use the sites that charge you to do a search for you. Every state should have a site that will provide you this information free of charge. The site should be an official "state" site.

You're right it did take about that long to get the funds but then you didn't even know about the money before.

Mail a little paper work to the state and later in the year - get a check. What could be easier.

You should see what a company has to go through to submit the funds to the state.

Well, I suppose that is fair. If he isn't going after it himself and if you didn't go after it he would get 50% of nothing - so this way he is definitely gaining.

    well i had two choices:

ONE: Tell him about it and work out a deal for myself

    OR
TWO: Wait until he kicks the bucket and claim in myself, but i have a feeling this option might take a while so i went with the first choice

I found my name on this list for Pennsylvania, but haven't filled out the paperwork for it yet. It does say it's less than $100 and it's from a former employer......but that's all I know to this point.

Here is the link to the CA site

    http://scoweb.sco.ca.gov/UCP/

It tells you who it is for, how much, the address associated with it and what company you left it with. Took about 6 weeks for my friend to get his $75.00
