volume control ?????????

Gamera is yelling too loud. I am going to put a volume control in it soon, I just put one in my Space Battleship Yamato pachislo. It works ok, but I have a question. I used the Radio Shack 271-1732. 100k ohms, +-20% tolerance, .05 watts.
The dial has a 300 degree rotation, but I can only adjust the volume at the top end. It adjust VERY QUICKLY without much turning. Almost 80 percent of the dial makes the machine silent. What would cause that? is it the 100k ohms, 20% tolerance? or the watts. I would like to just swap it out with a different one and test it before I do the same to my gamera.

Oh ya, it's stereo

recomended value of 1000 Ohms (1K) not 100k. this will allow for more range of control.
