Default New technique for old frames.

So, after 5 years of restoring machines, I finally found a technique for making nasty yellowed nishijin front cases look perfect. It is so simple, I really should have thought of it years ago.

Take some water-based polyurethane and pour it into a cup. Take several drops of off-white interior wall paint and mix it in. Then put a coat over the existing yellowed case. Once it dries, do it again. Each coat will make it lighter and lighter, until it looks exactly like new! Depending on how much paint you add and the color of it, it will take 3-4 coats to tint it nicely.

The results have really been stunning, and the process is really easy to control. Much better results than repainting, and keeps the wood-grain nicely. I recommend anyone doing restores experiment with this. You may really be surprised.

Had really good luck with the parchment color stain from minwax. Strip the front frame and restain it with that and it looks great. That way you can also fill nicks and scrathes with putty and you can't tell its there.
