the butcher shop I worked in as a kid had a penny gum ball machine, the vendor had 24 special gumballs in it and would leave a box of 24 candy bars to pay off.
when he would refill to the brim he would put a few of the special 24 balls near the bottom, I always put some pennies in as soon as he left and win a couple of candy bars
when the machine was almost empty with a few winning balls in I would turn it upside down to get them in the slots in the bottom

it was the smarties machine in the above post 10

the cell face and the top marque were all split cracked and heat wrinkled up... it look like it had home made parts on the back side to hold the smarties.. they said the cash box was missing.. that did not make sense to me cause it look like the cash box came out the front.. isn't the cash box in the back where it would be more secure?

Im not a allwuin guy.. neat machines

hi Moparformancesa lot of the allwins have a little wooden door under the main door, and thats where all the coins go after the "hopper" is full i am not really sure if there was a "coin box" there or you just open the door and slide out all the coins with your handnone of the ones i have ,have a coin box.....i did see once where one was up for sale...so i really dont know if some came with a cash box and some didn**** really common that the "backflash" is cracked or wrinkled its plastic and old and if they were out in the sun ...ouch...if it was a "WIN-A-SMARTIE" it was made in 1959/1960 by oliver whales scottie

After reading the first post on this i have been looking out for this show ever since
finally last night it was on...cool...
yes it was a allwin made by Oliver Whales called win-a-smarties...59/60
all the imformation on the show was correct ..but the owners asking price was way out of line
the inside of the game did look a little off with the home made parts, hard to tell what was changed because they didnt show it for very long.....
i would have made the guy a offer lol it would be a good project

I remember playing these as a kid, lots of different prizes not just cash.
The most popular ones with us as young boys was win a fag (which in the U.K. means cigarette)
I thought at the time when i was between 10 and 12 years old i was very lucky on these machines.
Now at 56 years old and five Heart attacks later i think my luck has ran out.
Guess i should have gone for the Gum

hi Derek1960wow 5 i think your still a luckie guy...do you collect allwins ?if so what do you havewhat did you as a young boy call these machines ,i have heard allsorts of things like allwin (of course) fruit machines, slot machines etc i am understanding that the word allwin started because some of the games had win and lose cups and some of them had nothing but winning cup and thats where the name came from "allwin" ......if the game has both win and lose cup there called wallmachine......same thing only different ....scottie

The Allwins machines were the Bryns machines i think (But not 100% sure) that they were the first.
Bryns have a Museum in tamworth near Birmingham, not far from where i am.
Its a theme park called Drayton Manor which was started by Bryns son i think.
At one time in the U.K. you couldent give the machines away there were so many.
I think that there are more in the U.S. than in the U.K. now.
One day i hope to go there to get some photos (But i have been saying this for years)
I went lots of times as a kid but didnt know about it then.

yes your right about giveing the machines away...
i have been collecting for a long time (before the internet) and i was writeing back and forth to a guy in the u.k. he would go to auctions all the time and pick up allwins for his collection.he would mail the auction catolog to me (which is a good reference tool,i really enjoyed looking at them )
it made me crazie how low the prices were ,i know its pounds and not dollars, but still, i would have bought pages of these things, but with the exchange being double the price, and then shipping etc i would have been paying way over what they were worth and what i was willing to pay
NOW i cant believe what the same games are selling for in the U K....wow...crazie....
even over here the price of these has gone up ,but not as much as in the U.K. .most people had no interest in them so you could pick them up very cheap.....
hey if you go to tamworth and take pictures please share them
