    Default Question about pachinko parlours

So in every picture i see of a pachinko parlor i always notice the chairs are so darn low to the ground. I think to myself, why? Is it some sort of psychological thing with being low to the ground and looking up at the machine that makes people want to like spend more money or something? or is it simply because the people are so short? or is it cultural? yet another weird question.

They are a little shorter than we are on average. Sitting in a parlor chair, you look only slightly up at the center on pachinkos and pachislos.

I'll bet it's just a question of ergonomics. I'm not so sure the average height of the Japanese is much different than any other race. At least my experience is that our exchange students are as tall, or taller than my own boys. I would be curious to find out how much difference there is.

A pachinko machine has a large area to interact with. The cell is what/ about 17 inches in height? And then the two ball trays and spin knob, and of course your spare tray underneath. So essentially, a player interacts with the whole vertical length, whether it's watching the play field, manipulating the pachinko balls, or operating the spin knob. The spare ball tray is on a shelf underneath the machine, and the player's knees go under this shelf. The videos I've seen put the average player's face staring smack-dab at the center of the cell. Very few are looking up or down (depending on stature).

I'm certain it's all meticulously researched just as it is in American casinos. A whole science dedicated to ergonomics, sights and smells, lights and pay-offs, all to optimize how much time a person spends on the machine.

The people I saw in the parlors didn't really appear to be having a good time. Most looked bored to tears, hypnotized by the balls and chain smoking cigarettes. For some of the patrons, playing is like their full time job and will sit there all day long. Even when they hit the big bonus rounds they just stared on. I found it very interesting but it definitely was not the Vegas atmosphere. I didn't hang out in the parlors for my entire trip so the ones I visited may not represent how it is everywhere though.

I sure had a good time when I hit the fevers but the parlors are so loud nobody can hear you anyway. I also made sure I got out of there if things weren't going my way. You can lose a lot of money very fast. It was quite an adjustment for me to look at the spheres as money instead of little balls.
