Who better to tell you what it is and what it does??

    My opinion?? It Rocks!!

Daverob's Dongle/Card Reader option "combo" is the best thing to come to the home Pachinko community since... well... Pachinko !!!

IMHO - it enhanced the play immensely. It is as near to the parlour experience (w/o hiring someone to stand behind the machine to fill the hopper) as you can get

When you DO get your modern machine (and subsequently others) consider Daverob's dongle/card reader an essential additon, you won't regret it

I thought I'd post a quick reply about why I originally designed the Card Reader Emulator dongle, and what it can be used for, and before I knew it I found that a couple of hours had passed and I'd pretty much written a whole chapter for my autobiography.

So instead of inflicting all of the minute details onto all of you, I'll just sum it up and say that the dongle was originally designed because I wanted a pachinko cabinet where all of the manual ball handling had been eliminated, and you could just walk up to the machine and start playing, but didn't want to have to modify the machine in any way (ie cyclic conversions, or wiring a 'cheater' button to a payout pocket sensor).

It was no problem getting hold of a ball lifter to keep the top hopper filled, but I had no means of getting the spent balls out from the behind the machine and back into the shooter tray ready to be played.

To cut a long story short, the original dongle was intended just to allow balls to be dispensed whenever the parlour 'ball loan' button on the upper front tray was pressed, but the design evolved into a complete emulation of the functions of the parlour ball loan/card unit, and eventually into a system where re-useable smartcards could be used in pretty much the same way as the pre-paid cards are used in the parlours.

There are a few reasons for people buying a 'Daverob dongle', some want to have a playing experience at home that's as near as you can get to a genuine Japanese pachinko parlour, so the cards and the ball dispensing is simply a part of getting that little bit closer to that experience. Others are just looking for a simple way of dispensing balls, so they don't have to cope with all of the extra ball handling that comes with a modern pachinko machine can get through 100 balls in less than a minute.

Some also like the fact that they can use the display to keep track of how many balls they would have needed to have paid for in a parlour, or they might want to impose limits and targets to play for. For example, if you want to see how long you can make 1000 balls last for, but don't want to have to manually count out the 1000 balls you're going to play with (or simply don't have 1000 balls!). Then you just set the dongle to give 40 credits (at 25 balls per credit) and start playing.

I hope this gives you some insight into what you can do with a Card Reader Emulator dongle, and why some of the members here are quick to recommend them whenever they are mentioned (for which I am eternally grateful ).

Thumbs up Re: Question about dongle

Dave's Dongles are a MUST HAVE on a modern machine, that is if you are a DIE HARD FANATIC of Pachinko. There is one thing that I have been wondering about since I have 16 machines, so far, Dongalized.

Dave, Do you think that because of the presence of a ball credit is known to the brain of the machine, the machine reacts in such a way (more Reaches, more action) as to make you WANT TO shoot all of your balls and make you spend, spend, SPEND? What do you all think?

The machines 'brain' has no knowledge of ball credits, and has no idea of the difference between dispensing the balls via the card reader unit, or simply putting balls in the tray by hand. In fact it doesn't even know when a ball has been launched or how many you've played, the only sensors are for when you hit a payout/start pocket or pass through gate.

The CPU can't 'see' what's on the credit display, as the display is driven directly by the circuits on the dongle. The connections from the D-25 card, reader interface connector go straight to the LED display itself, and there's no connections to the LED from any other part of the pachinko. (Same applies to the connections to the ball loan / card return buttons and the ball loan available LED).

Also the signalling that the dongle uses to tell the pachinko to pay out balls goes to the CPU on the payout control board. When a payout is made from the dongle, there is no signalling going from the CPU on this board back to the main CPU board that controls the odds and determines when a reach or fever is due. The only time any signalling might happen is when the upper hopper becomes empty due to a ball loan payout, and this usually only occurs on machines where 'payout tray empty' is also indicated by a sound or on the LCD along with (or instead of) the normal empty light in the top corner of the pachinko.

If you enjoyed pachinko before having Daverobs Dongle, you'll enjoy it more now. If you didn't enjoy pachinko before, now's a good time to try it again.
