    Default What's this little disc?

The front of my Sankyo has this little disc on the lower front panel. It's badly chewed up and I can't make out what it says (even if I could translate the kanji, it's still illegible). Does anyone know what this is?

If I could get it off, I'd consider trying to repaint it - maybe a stencil. I don't think it's the Sankyo logo, but if it is... feel free to mock me.

(By the way, I took the second photo when I first got the machine. It's significantly cleaner and shinier now!)

It appears to be stamped into the metal. In your second picture, you have a red thing on the assembly that has swung out. Could there be some relationship or duplication? If the red disk is stamped, there might be some texture, or the characters raised. What happens if you put a piece of paper over it and rub with a crayon?

I'm 95% certain the rectangle on the open section is the Sankyo logo. I don't have a good picture of it, and that's probably why.

I doubt I could get a good rubbing of it. It appears to be painted, plus the surface is deeply scratched - as if someone tried prying it off with a screwdriver and kept slipping.

    Hmmm... Sankyo kanji is 三共

first character looks like it could be this... 斉 - sei... really can't make out the second. One word I found with that first char that seems appropriate, though... is this: 斉射 [せいしゃ: SEISHA] volley, fusillade. But that 2nd char doesn't look right. Someone around here probably has a machine of similar vintage that might have a cleaner badge...

I'll get a better picture of it tonight. My friend the furniture-maker is coming over tomorrow to talk about cabinet plans, so I'm putting the machine back together for the first time.

If I have time, I'll try running the picture through Photoshop with a couple of different filters. You'd be surprised at the detail you can bring out. It's not exactly CSI, but you can definitely improve the image with a little work.

More photos of the mystery disc. I keep calling it a medallion. Don't know why.

Two pictures; the first one as-is, the second with some color filtering and edge detection overlaid. The first kanji character is pretty clear (to me). The second one, very hard to tell. The right side is especially badly damaged. It's hard to do much enhancement, since it's either the red paint or plain silver underneath.

If anyone can translate this, that would be very cool. That person gets thanks - and a cookie!

(If it just reads something ordinary like "good luck", I'll be slightly disappointed. I'm hoping it's something more... dramatic.)

This is from a newer Sankyo, the logo doesn't get scratched up as easily on this model...

Yep, thats what it is. Actually that first picture didn't need any enhancement.
Now, what does it mean? I don't know, I don't have my dictionaries any more. Sorry.
It does look like a very old version of the language though.
I am going to guess that the logo is the originial, old name of Sankyo.

Yes, that first character looks a lot like an X and a D. I have checked modern Kanji, and neither that first character or second pop up on a quick pass.

Take a look at the third column of this picture, this is what I am talking about. Still cannot find a listing of such kanji, or Chinese.chinese-writing-and-calligraphy_6.jpg

So maybe it's kanji for the "laughing so hard my eyes are closed" smiley face?

I'm not sure how many other people know about this but Google translate now lets you be able to write in the characters. You just hit the little arrow next to the character then select hand write.(red arrows in pic below show) It is a very neat feature and has come in very handy for me. The only problem is you have to do the stroke patterns right otherwise it won't recognize the character. Sometimes it is utterly uselesss other times it comes in handy (I couldn't get the characters right for that badge though).

Now I'm just waiting for them to be able to translate from a picture...

I don't know if this is true, but back in the 80's this guy once told me it translates roughly to "Don't play pachinko after midnight"..

Like I said, I don't know if this is true, but to this day I always stop playing at 11:59..

"Blowing smoke rings at the moon."

Strange, this feature is not working for me.

Odd. You made sure you had the input language as Japanese right. As it isn't for all languages just ones with odd characters like Japanese, Korean, ect...

Might be a browser thing. I'm running chrome. But I tired it on all browsers and didn't have any issues (safari, firefox, IE10).
