Default How to clean Pachinko brass nails

Some may say this is too much, but it's how I do it!

How to clean Pachinko brass nails on playing field:

    1. Remove as many playing field features as you safely can
    2. Working in small areas, dab a little Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish with a paper Q-tip on the side of nail
    3. Take Natural Cotton Wrapping Twine light load and loop around the nail one time
    4. Pull twine back and forth, letting it slip to where clean twine is around nail as you polish
    5. Repeat steps 1 thru 3 as needed
    6. Clean up any excess polish on playing field with paper Q-tips
    7. Working in small areas, dab a little Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish with a paper Q-tip on the head of nail
    8. Put the palm of your hand inside an old T-shirt and rub your palm over the heads of nails

How to clean Pachinko brass nails after removing from playing field:

    1. Remove nails from playing field
    2. Wash in hot soapy water
    3. Rinse with cool water
    4. Dry nails
    5. For lightly or medium tarnished nails, skip steps 6, 7 and 8
    6. Soak in a mixture of 1 cup white vinegar and the juice of ½ lemon with a dash of salt for 10 to 20 minutes
    7. Rinse with cool water
    8. Dry nails
    9. Place in a tumbler with a 50/50 mix of corn cob and walnut shells, also add a little Brasso for about 24 hours
    10. Wash in hot soapy water
    11. Rinse with cool water
    12. Dry nails
    13. Final polish by putting the end in the chuck of a hand drill, and using an old cotton T-shirt also Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish
    14. Reinstall nails

Unless you try to be more than you are, what you are is all you will ever be.

That's a lot of trouble (but I'm sure very effective) to clean nails that are off the machine. I've tumbled nails before with good results as you mentioned. However, considering all the steps and time involved, its cheaper (depending on what your time is worth to you) and much easier to buy new nails from Juno. They arrive in a few days, are shiny as they'll ever be and perfectly straight.

I'll try and find my post about ordering nails from him but in short you just shoot him an email with what you want. If its for a YJA auction for example where new nails sometimes show up, tell him what your max bid is and a link to the auction page and he does the rest. For the nails, I got a link from Max to a pachinko supply catalog. I emailed the page link to Juno and told him exactly what I wanted, he ordered and received them and shipped them to me.
YJA and ordering via the catalog thru Juno are the only way to get new nails that I know of. I ordered a kilo (2.2 lbs) and I think it was under 50 bucks for the nails, Juno's fees, and shipping. Seems pricey at first but that's enough nails for what, 5 machines at least?
Plus when removing the old nails I can pull them out without having to worry about damaging the heads or bending them, etc.
Couldn't find my old thread but here's the link to the catalog website:

I just let them soak in some CLR and water (about 50/50) for a few hours (5-6) then rinse, let dry. Then throw in tumbler with walnut and turtlewax chrome polish. Remove, rinse add new walnut (just walnut) then pull out rinse and dry and you're good. Then what you do is save the walnut from the second round to use as your first polish next time. (still have to add polish)

    100 machines and counting...

I definitely need to pick up some of these, would certainly come in handy to have around just in case.

I am with Max. Soak overnight in white vinegar and then a few days in the tumbler with walnut.

Thanks for the how-to! I tackled the heads today, but subbed in Brasso as my polish. I knew cleaning them would make a difference, but I was impressed at just how big that difference ended up being.

Only thing that sucked was the areas where nails are farther apart. Had to clean those one-by-one. It will probably be a while before I try cleaning the stems. My fingers hurt. lol.

For doing runs or fields of nail heads... Green bottle of Turtle Wax chrome polish (wally for 2.79), shake and open. Put some of the white stuff in cap, dip index finger into it periodically as needed. Apply a film over each head, doing 120-130 nails takes about 1 minute. Get cotton white t-shirt rag you have around, and apply a bit of the white stuff to it. Secure thumb into rage, and use side of thumb to apply burnishing/cleaning rotation to nail heads. Rows of nails take seconds to clean, and fields of seperated nails two at a time takes 5-10 seconds for each two nails. Total PF can be done in a matter of 7-15 minutes, for the heads. Nail bodies take a bit longer with the shoe string or the 'rope' technique mentioned above.

I haven't tried Turtle Wax yet, but I'll say this about Brasso for any noobies like myself who come across this. You can't apply it to very many nail heads at a time because it quickly sets up and turns to firm paste, then a hard chunk if left even longer. I only take a pea-sized glob out of the bottle at one time to work with or I end up wasting part of it.

Getting closer to starting this on my second machine, but my first took way longer than 15 minutes to do the entire field. Mostly because of inexperience, but also because they were so tarnished that some needed a second pass. Second one isn't as bad thankfully!

You are right, afterwards even with a minimal/effective amount of TW on the heads, the white stuff does dry and you get some white powder on the PF. Simply vac it up after you rub/polish off the stuff. I found doing 1/2 of the field at a time, setup doesn't occur as much and less powder if any is left on the PF or if working vertically on the bottom ball-out hole. Best of luck, and welcome to PachiTalk!

After using many types of polish over the years, I've settled on Simichrome. Its a soft paste and a little goes a very long way. Ice tried others and frankly I don't think there's a huge difference in other brands. They all have the same active ingredients I'm assuming. Simichrome doesn't have the issue with drying and turning to powder and it doesn't separate in the container like a few semi liquid polishes I've tried.

It's German made so part of the price is because of that. As I mentioned. A little goes a very long way and 1 tube is enough for plenty of machines. I've polished all my unrestored arrangeballs with it as well as plenty of pinball machine parts. You mentioned you're cheap but this stuff is worth it.

I found some on eBay for around 8 bucks including shipping. If I had a pachinko business of some sort I'd buy something cheaper but for my needs, its perfect. Its like whiskey, watches, and guns. I buy the best I can afford.
