Default What type of finish is applied to the wooden frame?

I have a 1950's ish single shot and i have sanded all the finish off down to bare wood. I would like to match it as close to the original as possible, does

anyone know what type of stain they used on those era machines?

Any help would be great, and i will post pics to see if anyone is familiar with this machine also.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to PachiTalk!

I am not sure what type of finish would be original to your machine although there are several members here who do amazing restorations and I am sure they will be along shortly and can help you.

I would love to see some pictures of you machine if you do not mind posting a few. We love pictures.

Here is a link to instructions on how to post pictures:

I have restored several old wooden front machines. Once the wood has been completely sanded and is ready for finishing, I just use a clear wood varnish. Initially, it won't match what you just sanded off, but over time it will take on a yellow tint and begin to look as it did once before. If you are adventurous, then you might want to add a touch of yellow tint to a can of clear varnish so that it will appear "aged" right off the bat. However, just know that it will continue to yellow further over the years as the varnish ages.

Well if you want what it looked like factory new. (meaning unyellowed) Then they basically used a white was. This is what I have found matched the closest to every hidden wood frame areas I have seen. Minwax Water Based Wood Stain - Stains - Minwax (Parchment is the color and you need the white tint base) But if you want it a little more yellowed you can go with the Harvest grain color. After I do the white was I put on 3 coats of clear. (I think I used gloss on the machine below)

Here is what it looks like on a machine.

And if you want to compare here is what bare wood looks like.

What kind of wood did you use for this frame(or is it original)?

    It is original.

I have only reveneered one frame before. And I did it with birch, man it looked great when it was all done. Should have kept that one.

    I really like the Asuka.

It is known as a front overflow, probably the mot desirable...depending on who you ask! I think Max has one like it, I always wanted to buy it from him, but he probably won't part with it! On my vintage wood frames, I usually sand them till I'm satisfied and rub boiled linseed oil into the wood. It works for my M1 Garande...so I tried it on my machine!almost done 009.jpgalmost done 008.jpgboiled linseed oil 001.jpg I thought about rubbing some white Minwax into the grain, and wiping it off before the oil, but was afraid of it not "taking" and doing something stupid. It is not original...but looks good!
