    Default Nishijin overflow/ashtray corner.

So, my wife found out about my second machine when she came by my office last week, but she actually likes it (and even spent a while playing my previous machine) so I'm safe there

I did, however, have a forehead-smacking moment today as I was trying to clean some brownish gunk from the corner of the overflow/ashtray of my Nishijin. At first I was confused as to why someone would put that junk all over that corner. And what is this crap, anyway?! It's definitely not paint. It's actually a little gummy, almost as if it's dried glue...

Yeah. Turns out it's just missing the aluminum cap from that corner and I was cleaning off 47-year-old glue.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to replace that corner cap. I was thinking of cutting out a piece of aluminum flashing and bending/trimming it to shape, but then I realized that I'm probably trying to reinvent the wheel again.
Has anyone been able to rather painlessly replace this piece?
Is there anyone out there with a beater Nishijin that they'd be willing to part with the piece for a little cheddar?

Yes. A piece of thin tin. 1 small cut in the curve. Used a larger piece and folded it right over the part. Remove excess.20190507_211815-1.jpg20190507_211742-1.jpg

That looks better than filling the groove with JB Weld , sanding smooth and painting!

Do you have any pics of how yours turned out, Tink?
My first try came out looking like seven kinds of crap:

Dunno about anybody else, but that doesn't look quite like a full '7 kinds of crap' to me...??? One or two maybe, ifn's there's some aspect not obvious in the pic -- even if so, I think I'd be pretty pleased if that was the result of a 'first effort', anyway...??

Arigato, AnythingObscure. I tried to add a ding or two so it’d match the rest, but it still looks too rough for my liking.

Tink, I bow to your skills. That’s a quantum leap better than my try. I’ll try taking some steel wool to it to even it out, but I may end up trying again.

As another (it sounds like?) nitpicker-to-death of 'all things in general' by nature, I'll concede that slight point -- still, I'd be d*mn proud if that was my first try to replicate such a thing...??

Okay, now that I have it back on the machine, I don’t feel so bad about how it looks:

    I guess context helps?

Thank you folks for your help again!

yea, that looks good to me ! I doubt anyone would notice if you didn't point it out to them. As they say, we're always our own worse critics.
