Default New to Pachinko - two machines purchased!

    Hi, what a great forum!

I found myself at the Fallbrook, CA avocado festival today with the Mrs and my daughter. Found a junk dealer off the beaten path (no avocados here) and saw two pachinko machines leaning against the door. Asked a few questions, and got a few vague answers. Figured he'd want $100 per for the pair, but when I asked he said he needed to sell out today, he'd give me both and a bucket of balls for $40.

    Sold!

One is a Sanyo Comet II. The other is a Sophia, but no model number (in English) to speak of.

I am open to hearing thoughts about value, questions regarding my sanity, congratulations, or other (Pachinko related) musings.

Tried to edit my post, to no avail... if you click on the photo, you'll go to the flicker set... lots of shots of the pair of machines:

The Nishijin is worth the $40 you spent for sure!!

However its going to be hard to find a front ball tray for that Sanyo. Hopefully someone here may be able to help you with that but they're kind of hard to find.

    By the way...

    Hey nice finds for $40!!

The Single shot is a great buy alone and if you can't find a Sanyo Comet II front tray, you could always use the machine for parts, as Sanyo Comet II's are nice Vintages (I have one myself) and I'm sure you will find another for sale

Welcome to PachiTalk!! You will find lots of interesting information regarding Vintages in the Vintage section of the forums, amongst the 'sticky' threads are videos of different models and also the 'summary guide' is a good way to find certain threads quickly regarding restoring, cleaning, dating, etc etc etc

    welcome to pachitalk!

as for your sanity, well, you have found a group of like-minded pachinko collectors, and we can be pretty insane about buying pachinkos.

if you are like most of us, this will not be your last pachinko purchase

the green one is a nishijin A (we classify A,B,C - vintagepachinko.com has some nice pictures and there are stickies at the top of the vintage forum to video by mopar on how the nishijins work.)

I have seen this machine completely restored sell for over $250 at vintage pachinko, and I have bought this machine for $50 off ebay, shipped, and for $20 off craigs' but with a key piece broken.

search for "nishijin A" "single shot", and you will find lots of threads about similar machines. (use the " in the search so there will be a specific search for the combined words)

as for the second machine, the major issue is that the front tray is missing. this could be very hard to replace. if vintage pachinko has it, they will probably want about $50 for it.

if you are really handy, you might be able to make one out of acrylic? I could imagine myself trying that or, make a carved wood tray?
    Single shot restoration progress

search for "comet II" and you will find lots of posts.

as others mentioned, there are often people looking for parts from comet II's, so you could sell those off.

welcome, again, to pachitalk. if you are like the rest of us "you'll be back"

Am new to the whole thing, so forgive my silly questions.

The spot on the working machine to insert the balls seems to be jammed. No way to get balls into it. I can open the cover and drop balls in one by one, and can convince some of the hoppers to distribute balls in a (what seems to me) random fashion, but no luck in getting balls into the thing.

    Any thoughts?

Welcome to the Pachinko Addiction!! There is no turning back now that you have started rescuing pachi's.

It's hard to tell from your pictures, but it looks like there is something blocking the hole where you deposit the pachinko ball. You may need to disassemble it to see what is going on inside. Please post some close-up shots of that area, both inside and out of the machine, and we will gladly talk you through repairing it.

    Again, welcome to the addiction!

Nice machines and a great find.

Both the top and bottom hoppers need to have enough balls in them to allow balls into the shooting mech. A minimum of 100 in each is needed.
The silver door will open as long as there's enough balls in the top hopper and close when the hopper is near empty

Only had about 20 minutes to tinker today. Was able to get the ball-blocker door open - THANKS ebb, for cluing me in - wouldn't want to pump any of my hard earned ball bearings into this machine if it weren't stocked well enough to pay out when I hit the big one! Problem 1 was the hopper didn't have enough balls - problem 2 was a dirty/rusty switch (mechanical) that needed some extra convincing to open the door.

    Regarding the same machine:

There is a white lever to the right of the glass. Pushing it will eject a ball from the red window to its left. It looks like this should send that ball down onto the trigger/playfield, but it doesn't. I'm not sure where the ball goes, and there's a lot of plastic guarding the area (from the rear), so I can't quite figure it out. Also, I can sometimes get it to release several balls that are built up in there (all onto the playfield at the same time ), but it's always when I'm watching from the rear and I can't really tell what's happening from the front.

Am I correct, and if so, how do I get it to start working properly?

I don't have a single shot, but I think when you get a ball in a pocket before the last win is done paying out it goes into the holding area and then you can push the button to release the ball for the payout..

I'm sure someone will be by to correct me if I'm wrong!!

The white release knob should only return your ball to the shooter(play-field) if the holding chamber is full. Otherwise it should push a winning ball to the red payout rocker.

I have two of these machines and both trays need sufficient ball to trigger the multiple release rockers.

The top hopper' rocker opens the silver door to the shooter.
There are two rockers in the bottom hopper. One releases the payout rocker the other tells the top hopper there is enough balls to play.
When the bottom hopper gets low the 2nd rocker will release tension on the top hoppers holding break and allow balls to travel down the metal drainpipe to replenish the bottom hopper hence covering the bottom rockers and reapplying the break to the top hopper. Sorry if it sound confusing just keep studying the back it will make sense.

Behind the red payout rocker is a u shaped holding chamber. This is where the white knob on the front comes into play. If you hit two winning balls at the same time(tough to do on a single shot but you can shoot up to 3 balls at once and/or have a friend feed balls for you)
one winning ball will be pushed into the holding chamber. This is done by the red payout rocker which has two ball chambers. The bottom chamber send the winning ball down through the payout trigger. While the red rocker is in the down position waiting for the payout balls to reset it the 2nd winning ball will enter the upper chamber and be pushed into the holding area when the red rocker gets reset.

    Here's some pic for comparison.

WOW Ebb, that is one seriously clean machine. I have my work cut out for me.

Thank you for so many answers. I don't think I have nearly enough balls in there right now. I am undecided as to whether to add them all before I try and disassemble and clean the whole bit.

More play questions: The shooter knob is obvious. Below that is another knob that doesn't seem to move. What does it do?
