    Default Sound controls, on Sinbad

Ok I finally have a picture of the sound controls on Sinbad. the One on the right is crooked , I had to re-solder it and it slipped abit before the epoxy was dry. I finally found a use for the Cold Heat cordless soldering gun! this works great for the tiny wires.

Slothappy.. Thanks so much for the 'Cold Heat' comment.. I own about 15 soldering irons for different applications, and I hate getting them out because of the cables.. I would love something cordless which is better than the rubbish 'gas' ones I have..

I didn't have a clue what you ment when you said "Cold Heat", but a quick search on google has shown me what could be the perfect tool for me.. I just hope that I can get one in the UK.

    Thanks again for the tip

Glad to help, I recieved this as either a gift or I picked it up out of cuiosity, it uses an arc, to heat fine wires such as speaker wires, I had no use for it until now, it seems to be the perfect way to solder the volume controls, it puts very little extra heat into the solder jiont, no overheating problems, I tended to overheat when I use a bigger iron.

get the extra tips as they are fragile!! i dropped it onto carpet and it broke off. And Yes it is safe enough to solder over carpet. BTW http://www.asseenontv.com/ This is the only place i could find the replacement tips

That you are Paul, a deaf man also! My wife (not manly) would not play it until I put in the controls, you see why I waited to put these in right? Sinbad went into a stingy mode so I needed some help throwing in tokens so broke down and put these in. I have since hit a BB. time to turn up the volume.

I actually found a review of it and have changed my mind, is they said that its inappropreate for "Semiconductors, diodes, etc".. This is to do with the fact that the 'arc' creates some high voltages which could easily blow microelectronic circuits

They even showed a picture of it lighting an Ultra-Bright LED that it was soldering.. Now thats scary!! The idea of passing electricity through the circuit that you are trying to solder is unbelievable.. If you can't use it for 'Semiconductors', then what can you use it for??

Still, its a nice looking product and the concepts blows my mind.. But I think I am going to skip this one, just in case!

    Cheers

It could be possible to fry an IC if used incorrectly. But one would have to work hard at it or have the worst luck to do it.
I use it to tin the wires, no possibility of damage here. it has a gap less than 1 mm I had to push fine solder into the gap to get it to heat.
I might experiment with some old hardware with a meter attached to see if it is possible to energize a circuit.
It could be avoided also by putting a stap between your 2 heat sinks, this way it would short the circuit with the strap instead of through the circuit.
I actually don't need the heat sinks with this but might use a jumper across the leads to to be soldered.

I tried one a few times and came to the folowing conclusion...

    (1) Eats batteries
    (2) Slow horrible inept performance
    (3) Eats batteries
    (4) fragile as hell, DO NOT apply any pressure
    (5) Do not throw the unit at the wife and dog when it fails
    (6) more cold solder joints then usable ones.
    (7) makes the perfect gift for someone with zero patience for things that dont work
(8)Guarenteed to NOT be a gift you get back next year

    Honestly.....
It's a piece of crap. Do'nt waste your money on it. Even a woodburning tool
does a better job. Do yourself a favor, buy a 20 or so watt iron with a *SMALL* tip at 800F. It will be fast and do a nice job.

I have to admit this is a dud in my book i have the "pro" model that does bigger guage wire and it works ok if you bridge the gap but thats easier said than done . and the battery case makes it hard to get into tight confind areas .if your going to do 1 or 2 quick connections its ok but for any real work a 20 watt iron is much better and worth pulling out those cables mine sits in my drawer at work waiting for road trips where it might be needed where there is no electricity.......

I thought it was junk after I tried it the first time, but as I said before
" I finally found a use for the Cold Heat cordless soldering gun! this works great for the tiny wires."

I have several other solder tools, I taught my sister how to solder the jewelry she makes with a micro butane torch. Really fine solder is the key here, and it is 'good' for tinning small gauge wires. I am amazed I found something it was able to do.
