Default Resistor size for volume control?

OK so I have several Moderns and I am about to set them all up in my garage so now is the time to do some volume control. I have a bunch or resistors and was wondering if any of them would work without harming the machines. I have the following machines. Super sea story 2, Thunderbirds, Captain Herlock, Gladiator 9 drums, & Looney Tunes. The 9 drums is adjustable enough to get a good level so more asking for the other machines. I could go buy some adjustable pots but I already had these laying around.

Here are the Resistor sizes I have on hand (all are 1/2 watt:
    3.9K Ohm
    5.6K Ohm
    22K Ohm
    47K Ohm

    Carbon-film Resistors (1/2 Watt)
    470 Kohm
    47 Ohm
    100 Ohm

    Thanks for any advice.

My recommendation is to wait until you can buy the potentiometers; you'll probably find you'll want to alter the volume, and the pots will work better than cobbling together a string of resistors for that. Plus, what you find sounds good on the bench volume wise may not sound quite as good once it's installed in the garage, whether it becomes too quiet to hear over the balls... or winds up being even louder.

I went ahead and ordered the adjustable ones. Garage is still in planning phase as far as layout and working out the logistics for my modern and vintage machines.

    Thanks for the advice,

Not sure if anyone sells them as singles. But if you enjoy your machine and think you may get another then it is nice to have extras. The last machines I got had three and four speakers in them.

Lol.. any more arcade machines and I would need a pine box and a 6' hole, because the wife will kill me.

Try Jameco and DigiKey. They'll sell parts by the single.

Can you cut apart the 6 pack volume controls......so you can use them on different machines? I have 3 that need volume control. I want to cut them into 3 sets of 2. Thanks.

yes the easy way is to snap them in to 6 pieces and install one at each speaker location.. clip the wire and install supper easy..

An old thread here I know, but I thought that I would update it with what has worked for me. On my 2008 Sanyo American dream machine it has a factory adjustable (read: loud, louder, and deafening) volume control. I added a 470ohm resistor on each speaker to drop it down to townhouse levels. Honestly I would say that the range of resistors would be between 100 ohm to 500 ohm for reasonable home use. If possible using a 500 ohm cermet potentiometer would probably give you the most usable sweep. I hope that helps someone searching in the future.

What you want is a 500 ohm linear pot. It will take you from wide open to nothing. Get them from Tayda Electronics on line. Cheap ]50 cents]and fast shipping. Be careful you don't order 500 K

OK, so it turns out my rather newly acquired pachislo is after all a little too much on the 'loud' side too. Esp. for instance when a 2yr old is having fun playing with it while the rest of the adults in the room are otherwise trying to carry on conversation and even though its set on its lowest volume already. [see also the "fun video of the day" thread last wk or so when I showed a little of that evening] And so I ordered up a couple of 500 ohm pots (from PartsExpress along with a few other assorted bits I needed to order anyway, they were likewise in the ~50c/pc price range) and made up a little aluminum bracket to hold them, adding a couple of nifty knobs from my junk drawers.

    PachiVol1.gif

Examining the inside of the door of my machine seemed to reveal a convenient spot to mount it, with one little self-tap screw and a plastic finish washer, in an otherwise square hole already existing in the stationary part of the latch mechanism where a tab is otherwise punched out/over to serve as the bottom rest for the actual moving part of it, and where the addition of the panel on the inside (nor its mounting screw) would seem to interfere with anything else.

    PachiVol2.gif

It fit there beautifully (I think?) with plenty of existing speaker wire already there (after pulling them slightly away from their original run) that it should take only minutes to clip one of each pair and solder to the new pot terminals, the next time I have the soldering iron in the house...?

    PachiVol3.gif

I'll certainly report back soon once I do hook 'em up, with results of how it works.

Meanwhiles before I actually do so -- does anyone have any advice as to what I should do with the existing amplifier and its volume control to avoid inadvertently damaging them in process?? My natural inclination would be to leave all existing set (as it is now) at its lowest volume level and then use the new pots to further 'attenuate' that signal level as little as possible more to tone it down -- in other words adding as little as possible further "purely resistive" load to the machine's amplifier. Beyond that my experience doesn't go too far into the whole "inductive" part of amplifiers and speaker systems though...is there a chance it might be better to do something else to ultimately keep all that stuff happy and unmelted/fried...??
