    Angry Used Car sales

Back in Feburary I sold my pride and joy a 2003 Mustang Cobra SVT
, A very rare car here in the UK. But with our first baby due in April and a very small wife, we desceided to get a 4 door saloon.
After hunting around, looking and test driving different cars, Finally brought a small jaguar x type from a local used car dealer whos been around for over 12 years. After test driving, and going over the car, Agreed on the price and any repairs to be made. Not much, faulty washer jet, keyfob not working, ABS & engine warning light. Picked the car up a week later after these were meant to be fixed. But no. We needed the car so took it anyway.
After months of " we're waiting for parts" or we're collect it tomorrow" and months of general BS. and finding other faultys, like two slow puntures.
Finally I'm told, all parts are in we're collect it tuesday.
Tuesday comes and goes. Car still in the drive. Constant telephone calls on wednesday, with no answer. Visit the dealer and nothing. Shut up shop gone. So last weekend stuck under the car, trying to find the faults myself.

    Costs.
    new washer jet £2.15
    New Keyfob from ebay £10
    ABS sensor £75
Refit 2 tyres as seal leaking £20

Just over £100 for parts, and thats to the general public. I'm sure they could have brought them cheaper. But its the washer jet that really annoy me, Cheaper than a pint of beer.
But now with a three month old I need it to be safe. I'll be picking up the parts on friday and expecting a dirty weekend.

    OK RANT OVER

Oh and the little fella loves sitting in my arm while playing pachinko.
I guess he loves the lights and the video. But always jumps when asking for more balls through the call button.

once they get your cash, ist "too bad charlie"

many new cars are impossible for the average guy to repair anymore.

in the old days i could replace a generator or starter in a half hour and a water pump would take an hour.

tune ups were very easy too, no computer brain to mess things up!!!

I do all my own servicing and repair work. except gearboxs. Have done ever since I started to drive. Rebuilt a few engines over the years too.
I was doing the engine for a 66 mustang, At the same time, me and some friends took a trip to Florida. I brought a new suitcase while there and come home with all the pistons, bearings gaskets etc. But I found the same thing in the US as I do here. Most new (not all) auto parts store staff including main dealers. If its not on the computer, they don't know. And not willing to help. I still find a good old boy every now and then, Who knows what he's talking about, You can be sure he'll get my repeat business.

The new Reault Megane, The owners manual says if you want to change a blown headlamp bulb, You have to have a main dealer do it.
£3 bulb plus £60 labour costs, If its a xenon bulb its nearer £200 beacause they have to remove the front bumper. and hardware. For a lightbulb
The saleman don't tell you that.

as if that wasn't bad enough ,some cars over here don't even have transmission dipsticks anymore .you have to bring your car to the dealer to have your tranny fluid level checked .

You are not kidding about that! We have a KIA minivan which has been a great vehicle during the past four years. We drive it from Denver to San Diego and Mexico several times each year and it has never let us down or had a major mechanical issue (other than typical maintenance items). It's a very reliable vehicle and we are quite happy with it.

Last fall one of the headlights and a lower fog lamp went out with two weeks of each other, so I went to the local auto parts store and bought four new bulbs so that I could replace both head lights and fog lamps all together. Little did I know that you have to remove the front tires, plastic shrouding under the wheel wells, front apron and bumper, as well as the battery and washer fluid reservoir just to get to the lamp sockets. After two hours and only one bulb changed, I put the van back together and took it to the dealership where I gladly paid $118 to have the remaining bulbs installed by someone who knew what they were doing.

You certainly aren't kidding when you say that the dealer fails to tell you about such things when they are trying to sell you the car. I still would have bought the van, but it would have been nice to know such info in advance.

I've rebuilt 3 engines, and put in a few clutches and transmissions in my younger days and did a lot of work on my son's 67 mustang and keeping all our family cars running.

when I bought my 1999 Escort just before I retired, I stopped working on cars.

    Good News.
After replacing the CV joint with ABS sensor. The ABS warning light, Engine Managment light have both gone off and the cruise control works again.
