Default Anybody have a foam in place / Instapack machine?

In what I would consider a case of 'bidding fever', I bought an Instapak Speedypacker III at a local auction this week.

It came with everything I need to operate, and fires up, but its giving me an error about cleaning a filter snd dispenser.

Now, you might think 'hey Nick, read the manual', but infortunately I dont have the manual and it isnt on the Sealed Air Corp web site.

Anybody here have experience with these machines that I might be able to tap your brain about it a little?

I have a full 50 gallon barrel of B solution (65% full) and full barrel of the A solution.

We use a machine just like that at work. Once part a and b mix..it expands into foam in a bag. The only problems we have with it is that the injector can get clogged now and then, and the heat sealing tape can burn out. it's easy to replace. the filter always gets clogged. My shipping room manager uses a solution in a spray can to clean it, but I can't remember what it is called...I can check monday at work.

These are an excellent way to custom pack, nice grab if you get it working, I lost my login for the auction so I did not bid on anything this week. save me $$$.

I tried contacting the Co. via email on purchasing one of those machines.
I have been considering starting a Pachi business and those machines are a great secure way to pack. Only I never got a reply back!!!!!!

GoodLuck with it let us know if you clear the error and how you like working with it.

One thing important to know is that the chemicals are toxic.

You should wear a vapor mask (not a paper dust mask )if you have to break up or cut the stuff after it has dried as it is very carcinogenic.

We have one at our business www.paknship.net click on the Foam-In-Place link and look at the gun. If the gun looks like this one, there is a lid on the top and two screens underneath. Don't get them mixed up. We have a special cleaner but you might try MEK (Methyl Ethyl Chloride it think from the Home Depot). Use nitrile gloves as this stuff goes right to your liver, unlike alcohol that must be taken internally. Be careful not to damage them and there are also two teflon orings that must not be damaged. The chemicals are expensive, we use the 15 gallon containers and they run around $1100 for the pair. Also, I think there is a suction filter on the bottom of the pumps. You may want to check them for crud.
    Hope this helps.

Wow, I read the MSDS data and I relaly didn't think it stood out as being so toxic.

I know I was exposed to some of the raw material when i loaded it (some on my hands that i wash off after 10-20 mins). Great!

Follow up to those that use it, have you ever used the materials that were over a year old? These barrels look like they are almost three year years old.

All in all, I think I made a big mistake buying them. I did a bit of research before i bought it, but clarly not enough.

I meant that the MEK is the nasty stuff. The FIP is fairly "non toxic".

Not sure what you paid for the system but I'd guess you could turn it over on Ebay and make money. Just a thought.

Thanks for the clarification! Yeah, we use MEK in our lab, its good stuff.

I did work ont he machine a bit. The fluid is making it through the hoses. I bypassed the nozzle control and fired it up to see if it was clogged. Sure enough, the stuff make it to the spray head.

The part A flows like water when its heated, the Part B, is still fairly thick even at temperature.

I cleaned out the nozzle, but still the part B solution doesnt make it through the nozzle channels. Filters and whatnot are allowing material to pass, so I'm guessing its something deeper in the nozzle head, of the material is too think to pass due to temp, or age.

I'll see if I can get a sealed air tech out here soon.

    Thanks for the tips!

    Just a follow up.

I got the machine working! When I get my boxes I will be able to ship!

I solved the problem not 20 minutes after I ordered a new part, I guess I'll have a spare!

Since its not the 'high density' stuff, I gotta figure out the best way to protect the slot without the foam being 'over compressed'.

Phase 2 begins! Thanks for the tips and support, I really appreciate it.

are you going to foam the machine in the box?!!
i would think you would do like everyone else and make up an upper and lower mold so you can produce pre-made foam box inserts that cradle the machine both top and bottom. you just drop in the bottom set in machine then set in upper foam pack and seal box up for shipping.

We often use large heavy duty garbage bags to make large pouches. If we want our foam to be desnser (is that a word?), we will through some packing p-nuts in the bag before we shoot the foam. As the foam rises, it captures the p-nuts and distributes them in the foam and gives it a little stiffer consistancy. You need to play around to see what works best for your packing needs. Be very careful with the FIP, once it gets on something, it is next to impossible to get off. I've ruined pants, shoes, the carpet in my back room. Fortunately, no customers stuff. Also keep in mind that the chemical reaction produces about 150 deg F heat. It can burn you and melt some items. You don't want to pack chocolate with it. Finally, the vapor given off contains carbon dioxide and can cause some people with epilepcy to have a seizure.

    Thanks for the tips.

This is the 'speedypacker' so it only makes the pre cut / sized / sealed bags of foam.

I can preset the length and the fill level, but cant spray willy nilly as a generic fill.

I have alot of experience with these FIP machines so if you have any new questions I would be more than happy to help. Keeping the mixing chamber clean is the best way to avoid problems...gun solvent... is your best bet. Feel free to contact me if you have any more issues.
