I think it's more like Mochitsuki, or rice pounding. The center 'wooden' part looks like a mortar, and they're holding the pestles.
In the attached image, it looks very similar, although not Japanese.
I could be wrong though

I can see a similarity, and there is a Japanese cultural story about a rabbit that lives in the moon and pounds the rice into mochi. But after discussing it with the family, we've decided that we wouldn't remember a word we can't pronounce! So Hippie Bunnies it is.Originally Posted by compirate

Great job on a nice looking machine.
I think finding a machine where the center feature matches the cell design adds value and visual appeal.
I'd keep it too!
