If it is stained Dark Walnut then more than likely it is made out of poplar, cheapest wood around. When I worked at Kimball they used poplar for their office furnature and pianos and just stained them to make them look expensive. Alot of people that used to work for Kimball piano wondered if all the people caught on to their cheap practices and that was the cause for Kimball to do away with their piano line.

Kimball makes all sorts of desks etc. you take two desks that are set up the same way, ex. center drawer and side drawer are the same dimensions the whole nine yards. One is sprayed with oak stain, and the other is sprayed with mahogany stain. Your desk that has the mahogany spray on it will cost you roughly 300-600usd MORE than the same desk sprayed with oak. same poplar wood just different stain. Same price to build just maybe 2-3usd to make it look like mahogany wood.

From the end grain photos I'd say its pine stained about $11 worth of it $20 max. It looks like elaborate feet, no front ball return, and can't see but it might actually make it more difficult to refil top hopper.
