Default How to repair chrome on plastic pachinko parts

If you have chrome plastic parts on a pachinko machine that are pitted, flaking, or separating here is a fix that may help it at least look better.

    Excellent work and post!
I'm not addicted to Pachinkos. I can quit at any time. Did I tell you about the three machines that I have on the way?

Outstanding post and very descriptive. Getting a good chrome finish without using actual chrome is always a challenge. I've had really good results with various chrome paints for serious hobbiyists that are designed to be sprayed thru an airbrush after involved surface prep. The problem though, is the higher the actual metal content in the fluid, the less durable it is. Spraying it with a clearcoat helps but reduces the shine of the chrome, usually it makes it look like plain silver. The best thing I've used and seen is chrome heat activated foil/film but that's pretty much only for flat surfaces. Hopefully the product you outlined is durable.

What emmadog said is correct... I recommend a good clear coat you may want to experiment with finishes from shiny to dull to find the right effect.
The best clear coats are usually a mix of 2 different cans of application.

i haven't found any chrome paint that stays chrome after clearing. it really dulls it to a silver finish. i'll see if i can dig up some photos of pieces i've done but next time i have to chrome a part, i'll give cardwwi's paint a try.

Interesting. I STILL need to remove the old gold chrome effect off my Yellow Cab prior to recoating. If I can soak it in bleach, It would be easier than the 1000 grit wet and dry I'm currently using.
I may have to give it a try. Although finding a container big enought for the door frame might be a challenge

here's some old pics from an arrangeball i restored. the chrome paint is called "spaz stix" and is designed to spray inside clear lexan rc car bodies. i airbrushed it but i see now that it's also available in a rattle can. the cup shaped chrome parts are reflectors that house a bulb and are then covered by the clear red plastic. the rings are the parts that i sprayed and the results were better than i thought they'd be but this particular product can't hold up to handling and turns to drab silver if clearcoated. i don't know how well the chrome on these lasted because the machine went into storage for awhile and then i sold it. my recommendation at least on this product, is with proper surface prep as cardwwi outlined (for this stuff, the surface must first be sprayed with gloss black) pretty damn close-to-chrome results can be had but only for parts that won't be touched.
can't post pics for some reason but here's the thread and it's post #5

Awesome post nice work. I used to build plastic models back in the day there was a product called all clad chrome and it was very shiny. It used a gloss black as a base coat then the chrome was applied later. I wonder if its durable enough? Has anyone ever used that on a pachinko part ?

Here is a video of instructions ( this is not me nor is it my video) do you guys have any expierience using plastic model paint on these or is it not durable ? Just curious. This post has inspired me. I have this issue with flaking on one of mine but leary to use the all clad i already have on my shelf.

i researched the various chrome paints pretty extensively at one time and i still have some alclad. i learned that none are a true chrome finish but a couple come close. the problem is durability and the better the chrome effect, the less durable it is. applying a clear coat drastically brings down the shine so much so that the result is a sort of satin silver finish. the best method is hot stamp chrome foil which is durable and looks great but the huge downside is that it only works on flat surfaces.
there are companies that will chrome your plastic parts so thats another option.

Thanks i figured as much as those models are not meant to be constantly handled like a pachinko machine you save me much frustration i appreciate that !!!!!

it just depends on which parts and if theyll be handled or not. some parts like ones on the playfield, wont be touched on their painted surfaces so those are good candidates.

I was going to see if these guys would do the recoating on the yellow cab. But as with all things. Professional means expensive.
