I wonder if someone swapped out the center feature and put one in that wasn't a match for the ball tracks and pass through to the lower tulips?

It is odd and that is a possibility about the center being swapped out but there are no additional screw/nail holes so not sure. The whole thing is weird.

    2. Close lower tulip
    3. Close top tulip which opens lower tulip again
    4. Close lower again.

It is really fun if you can hit it in that order.
Finally working on this machine. As the back is closed behind this tulip and the center feature does not have a hole in the bottom to drop into this tulip, is there a way to make it stay always open? I would prefer not to do that but the tulip is absolutely useless once it is hit and closes. The only way to open it is to manually drop a ball in. It is kind of silly.

    Thanks for any advice,

Interesting center for sure, looking at this pic ..Center.jpg the markings on the bottom looks like there is space for the balls to travel under the center and enter the tulip below. Would be tougher to hit, but appears it may be possible.

possibly.. but the only way i can think of would be, to glue them open and then drill out the bottom of the petals so a ball can pass threw.. it would be permanent.

It would be beyond impossible. Even manually dropping a ball in is tight.

Hmm. Ok I will think before I do it as I won't be able to reverse it. I just find the tulip a little frustrating as it serves no purpose and actually blocks the lower tulip. I am giving as a gift for my sister who has little kids and want to make sure it is fun for them.

This is definitely a head scratcher. Would hate to see you riun a good tulip, would you be able to get a measurement of the spacing here?Center marked.JPG

I prefer not to either but not sure what else to do there. I could just leave it but it makes it really useless but nice per game. Do you mean spacing from bottom behind the mouth of the clown to,the bottom? Not sure what you meant, sorry.

So I am in the middle of removing the back and the pathways are pretty neat and different from the other machines I have done but this is first Nishijin I have worked on so maybe this is pretty common. The ball if dropped in the center will drop on to a series of levers to open both the left and right tulip and then drops into the lower center tulip to open it. The piece they are attached to covers the hole for the tulip directly below the center.

    Is this something common?

Yes, exactly, from behind to the lower area I highlighted, just seems to odd to be there and not function.

I seem to recall seeing one somewhat similar that I thought would be impossible to hit, but the balls did in fact bounce in occationally.

The levers off the centers are way cool, love the ones with extra mechanics to trigger more tulips open.

i never even saw the highlight sorry. I did not enlarge the pic the first time. I will measure and let you know.

I think the levers are pretty cool too, I never saw them before, though my experience is on a limited number of machines. I've only restored 3 prior to this one. I have a handful still waiting to restore so not sure if what they have is similar or not.

it is 1/2" from top to bottom. Even if wide enough I don't see anything going in there. I will once done reassembling try with the tulip as is for a while and see what happens before I do anything. I won't see my sister for a while as she lives in another state and so will have some time to play it before handing it over.

Ah....should be enough space then. I finally remembered where I saw similar, it's on my football computer pachinko .IMG_20150913_215655.jpgIMG_20150913_215618.jpg
Same space and tulip type, it does open sometimes

Well, nearly a year later and I finally finished this machine. Just working on adjusting nails. I want to replace the plexiglass as it has some bad scuffs and build a cabinet and will deliver to my sister later in the summer. I just wanted to mention that I have yet to get anything in the pass through tulip once closed but will leave as there is plenty of action without forcing it to stay open.

The center feature while not my favorite in terms of design as I'm not a clown guy, is still pretty neat in how it works. The eyes have little levers for lack of a better word on the outside and if a ball hits one it makes both eyes move and the nose switch sides of the face. I did not think it did much more than that at first but this is how it works. If a ball enters the center on the side without the nose it enters a hole behind the mouth. If the nose is on the right side and the ball enters left side of the mouth it opens the left tulip. If the nose is on the left and ball enters right side of the mouth it opens the right tulip. If the ball at anytime enters above the nose it goes in a hole behind the nose and opens the left, right and bottom center tulip. Pretty neat. Attached are some photos hopefully showing the holes in the center to explain.

All and all a fun machine and I am looking forward to giving to my sister and her family.
