Default Sankyo Star Wars 2005 Shooter Not Working08 , Error Code 8

    Hey Team,
I bought a 2005 Star Wars Sankyo when I was stationed in Japan, great deal, and loved it for quite a few years. I moved back to US in 2008 and the power converter went out in 2011. I had the unit in storage and just brought it out and fired it up. All the lights and sounds work great! When I drop a ball in the scoop it pays out and spins the wheels on the LED. However the shooter/hammer does not work and after multiple resets and shaking wires, fuse check, I still have a error code 8 and the hammer doesn't .... hammer.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to troubleshoot further?

    Thanks!

    Az

I've heard they have those in Tosche Station!

Check the dongle in the back. Little thing that plugs into a DB-25 connector. Could be bad or missing.

Thanks! Dongle is in place and i removed the back shell to inspect the components soldered to the pins/connector. Is there any way to verify the dongle works? A pin/resistance check?

Hello Aztek40 and welcome to the posting side of PachiTalk

I'm note sure about checking the components on the dongle but if it is bad then I can send you a freebie if you like.

Also check the fuse on the board that the dongle is attached to. Take a look at pages 30 and 36 of this file on the Lumina frame.

Awesome manual! I used it to tear down the entire machine, shake cables, check fuses and everything looks good. I put it all back together and still code 8. IMG_1272.JPGIMG_1271.JPG

The dongle is a very basic 24vac to 18vdc convertor.
Did you remove the fuse and check it with a meter or just a visual inspection?
Those glass fuses don't always explode and go black when they go. Sometimes they look intact when they have actually blown.
After that. you need to check the dongle is getting 24vac, and outputting 18vdc. So you need to have a meter that can read both ac and dc voltages.

In trying to duplicate your problem I get the code #8 if I leave off the dongle or with that still in place and pulled out the fuse below the dongle. This remains the same after multiple resets using the reset button under the LED . I'd check the fuse outside of the machine with a meter as Drunkenclam mentioned.

Also look to see if all the LED's are lit up above the 10 fuses also shown on page 30 of the manual. That is if you haven't yet already. I'm not certain if any of these could play into the problem or not.

Thanks, I'll check this weekend. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and have had my own multimeter for years. I ohm'd out the fuse and it checked good. Do you have a pin out on the dongle? Also, i understand the machine is 24 VDC input. Does it have a converter to switch it back to AC before the dongle?

Pachinko machines generally run off 24VAC not DC, While there are a number of more recent machines that will run from a DC supply, I'm not sure I would recommend it, as the input voltage to the pachinko's switch-mode PSU will be lower and may cause issues. The 2005 Star Wars machine does have an AC feed to a zero crossing detector circuit on it's cell CPU board, so I would assume that it needs an AC supply rather than DC.

If you are running from a DC power supply (and it appears you are from your photo!). Then you are likely to run into dongle problems, as the dongle only uses a single diode to rectify the AC supply voltage to make a DC feed to enable the shooter handle. With a single diode it conducts for half of the AC waveform and blocks for the other half, so with a DC input there's a 50/50 chance the diode will just block the supply and there will be no output to enable the ball shooter.

While I would recommend swapping the DC supply for a 24v AC transformer (rated at 160-200VA or 6-8A), you may be able to get the machine to work by simply swapping the DC input wires over (+ to - and - to +), then you may find the dongle (and ball shooter) will start working.

A little more info and pinouts/diagrams of the dongle and it's connections can be found on my website.

To be fair, I didn't when I first looked at the photo, but as soon as Aztec40 mentioned 24VDC another look raised my suspicions and it certainly doesn't look like a wound AC transformer.

Ha! Sweet, good fix! Any known vendors? I just ordered the converter from Amazon thinking it was the right one.

I'm more surprised it didn't suffer from the cold start up problems that face this machine. I guess you must be either lucky or be in a warm climate.

As to where to buy. I'm in the UK so my suppliers would be no good. But I use RS components and Farrnel. Just see what Heir Google says.

I have bought a few transformers from Marlin P. Jones. They are here in Florida, and I get them PDQ. Never had any issues.
