Certainly a possibility. Right now, my interest level for the project is high and the "more important stuff" level is low, so there will be at least some progress.

Some incremental progress. Brackets, hardware and a point for the screw to spin on. Took the first actual measurments so I could get an idea how it was all going to fit together. If I get some time today, I might be far enough along to test weather balls will actually move up the thing!

Not as much progress as I'd hoped. Darn work keeps getting in the way.
    Maybe today...

    It Works!!!ish.
I got it all assembled far enough to learn two things. One is that balls go up the screw when you turn it, and two, the balls fall out when you stop. Actually, I learned a few other things, but I'm still cogitating on them.

Hopefully this is just the first of many successes on the project.

I would love to see videos of it in action.

One of the other spiral lift used two rodd going vertical where your aluminium is. Sort of like a railway track going straight up with the spiral pushing it up as it rotates. So when it stops the rod stops it from rolling back.

I was looking at some of the screw lifts in on rolling ball sculptures and yeah, I need something on the front side. The balls have a mean backspin as they are going up the screw that I am sure contributes to the jumping out problem. Rigidity of the rail is another issue; the spacing from the screw becomes larger in the middle of the span. Got a couple of ideas, not sure yet what I'll do.
I have some stills, but I forgot to take the camera home.

Are you currently operating the lift by hand or using a motor?

By hand. A motor seems like a secondary problem/concern next to the mechanism. But I am fishing around for one because when I start tackling the ball feed problem, I don't want to be reaching up to the top of the thing when my attention is at the bottom.

One excellent source for small industrial quality geared DC motors are old copy machines. They're also great for salvaging many various parts for the do it yourself'er.

Best thing is they routinely appear in CraigList's FREE section! You just take the useless frame/junk to the dump.

Good news, bad news. The good news is that I have solved the track problem with a piece that provides more rigidity and a convenient place to mount the strip of lexan that keeps the balls from falling out. I found a motor/candidate. Thanks SteveFury, turns out that I had a box of old DC motors that I had forgotten about. So I'm down to a bunch of fiddly bits to finish up before I can start on the ball feed/collector.
The bad news is that work has picked up again and I am obligated to work on OPS. (other people's stuff)
I suppose that's not really bad news; OPS pays the bills.
    More when I have it.

So, just so you know, I haven't left this hanging, yet. I need to fab up a motor mount and some pulley adapters so that I can power the screw. I was sketching up some stuff and decided to take a break an browse CL. There was a pachinko machine less than two miles from me for $20! I don't think this one is salvagable, heavy pitting in the chrome, broken plastic. The glass release is bent. I'm not sure why I still bought it; probably figured the guy needed the $20.
So I guess the secret to making progress on a project is to stay off of CL.

Well I'm not a pachiholic. I'm a Pachihoarder. I have only bought 3 new machines this month. I don't think there is a cure. Well then again I guess running out of money might be a cure.

    100 machines and counting...
