Talk about lucky! That would be me. I was born in August of 59. Growing up in the 60's with the war on TV every night, it was just assumed that everyone would go to war. By the time I was 18 though, they had not only eliminated the draft but also the registration. In the early 80's they reinstated the registration and they had made it retro-active back to people born in 1960 and up. I missed it by 4 months.

I never saw my Dad happier than than day when he knew I was never going to have to face what he did.
    Meanwhile, somewhere in Oklahoma.

We can all be thankful now, for men like you guys... boys forced into manhood via a trip through H-E-L-L.
They stopped the draft the first year I was eligible for it. I was OK with that, but didn't understand myself at the time (or especially now) how we could ship out boys... and have so much of the nation turn their backs on them!

    You MEN have our appreciation!

For years, all I knew about 'Nam was what I saw on the nightly news... the scenes of gunfire... and the body count report that they just HAD to update each time. (How many died today?) It seemed like certain death to a 12 year old... and when my brother was drafted, I cried for days when he boarded the bus. Until he showed up at our door unannounced a few days later... being rejected for an ulcer and broken arm in years past. It never bothered me again when he picked on me.

I was almost as lucky (or maybe even luckier, depending on how you look at it). In 1970 I was an air traffic controller. It was a draft deferred job - for a little while. Then they ended all job related draft deferments. They called me up for service. I reported to the induction center. They sent me home. Turns out that 3 years as an air traffic controller had given me an ulcer. Because of that, the Army didn't want me.
