    Default Mame newbie questions

Hi I'll post further comments in the Mame section, but it appeared a month dead. I love playing mame on the computer, and have thought about a cabinet before. I want to use a PC and monitor. Can someone point me in the right direction about wiring in buttons and joysticks? I did some looking around on google, and got information such as hacked keyboards, microswitches, but not at level 101. Any links or info would be much appreciated. Also, youngjedi, could I get a regular monitor display to flip upside down for 2nd player on a cocktail table? Thanks to everyone in advance.

As for the monitor flipping back and fourth on a cocktail cabinet, It's actually controlled by the rom itself. Mame doesn't flip the screen, but the settings in the game do. most games will have a setting for Upright or Cocktail in the onscreen menu. Pressing Tab ... menu pops up. Other options are lives per coin(free, 3, or 5), and fully programable controls.

If you have Mame already installed on your PC (I use Mame 32 because of it's nice GUI) then open pacman, go into the menu, set it for Cocktail, play two player. The second player screen should be upside down.

In mame32, You can set up the initial start screen and size, but the "flipping" is controlled in the ROM.

The monitor I used is a Low resolution arcade Monitor. It's the exact type used in the original arcades...I did this so I can get the truest experience. I have found that a typical PC CRT monitor has trouble displaying the low res graphics and leaves a "fuzzyness" on the screen. With the 19 inch monitor I got from Happ Controls, the graphics are perfect and clear.

If you want to build an arcade cocktail cabinet...Do what I did. Get the kit from ArcadeDepot.com - Home of the Real Wood Arcade Cabinet Kits! The kits are super easy to build, and look great (no, I am not affiliated) Or, you can try Arcadekit2go.com I have never used there kits.

One last thing...To wire Joysticks, You could do a Keyboard hack, but for better versitality and ease, I used the Ipac4 from Ultimarc. GREAT PRODUCT!

I've been thinking about a cabinet too, but have so much other stuff on my plate (cabinets, aquarium, etc...) that I haven't had time to research it. I've been using Extra MAME on my computer for the front end to play games. My primary intrest is the old laser games, and I've been curious about the DAPHNE emulator. Does anybody run this on their MAME systems?
