I agree the seller must be brain damaged. OTOH, all it takes is one buyer who is more brain damaged. It'd be like winning the lottery!

They are usually more expensive than in the US, as you have to stick with a certain format for numbers and letters ie current plates are LLNNLLL, but previous formats were LNNNLLL, or LLLNNNL. This makes it a lot harder to spell out words and names, so combinations that do are often quite highly valued

For example it would be impossible to get a registration of 'PACHI' as you can only ever have three consecutive letters, and even though a 4 is often used as a replacement for an A in personalised plates, you cannot have 'CHI' as a letter combination as the letter I is not used as it might get confused with a 1.

As far as pricing goes, the licencing authority (DVLA) usually sell off the good ones at auction and there's quite a secondary market in buying and selling plates.

As a frame of reference doing a search on their site for 5LOT most combinations come up at between $800 and $2500.

WOW...in PA, they are only an additional one-time $20 fee on top of the regular registration fee which I believe is under $30 yearly.

in indiana you pay an extra 35 on top of other fees. they make a killing off of new cars, wife got a new hybrid 2yrs worth of plates is now up to 671usd each year the price goes down. after the car is 10 yrs. old its just a flat 25usd for a regular plate.

In Florida they go by the weight of the car, I pay around 25.00 a year for a generic tag.

special tags run about 25.00 extra.

In CA you have to buy a plate and title twice and pay $50. You have to get the metal plates in the mail first before you can get the vanity ones. The plate # is on the title so you have to go to the DMV 3 times and have to have the car there the last time with a screwdriver or you have to drive there without plates. There is a six week time when you may be pulled over for expired plates/title. They won't issue a new title without invalidating the old one. It takes 6 weeks to make a vanity plate so you are ridding on a temporary title for that time because you have surrendered the old one to have the new plates made.

Everyone here is doing their e-mail on there Vanity plates because all the good ones are taken by cars on no-op in their driveways holding plates for cars until they are transfered (can take about 6 months).

BTW, you have to buy your old plate and title back when you transfer it because you can't sell it without a plate even to have it crushed.

But you have 7.5 characters to work with and you can have things like smileys and peace signs on the plates which don't go on the title.

You can also get old blue/yellow (70's), black/yellow (60's), yellow/black(50's) plates converted to a vanity plate because they are all still valid numbers that have not been reused.
