CAIRNS, Australia -- Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart on Batt Reef, off the remote resort town of Port Douglas in northeastern Queensland state, his wildlife park Australia Zoo said in a statement.

Crew members aboard Irwin's boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a short time later, the statement said.

I think it was bound to happen sooner rather than later, although I am very sad to hear this news. All my family enjoyed watching him on the televsion & I have a very upset daughter today after telling her the news.

Steve Irwin was a man of action. His death from a wound inflicted by one of nature's most peaceful creatures was totally unexpected.

Steve, raised the awareness of millions to environmental and ecological issues which placed man as both the destroyer and protector of our world's environment in which all creatures live.

I genuinely believe Steve loved all animals more than his own species. To have died at the hands of another human or in an automobile accident or by disease or age was not to be Steve's fate. He lived a life of adventures that only others could imagine and sometimes envy but mainly fear.

I regret the great loss Steve's untimely death has caused for his loving family. Their pain is great and the world shares in this time of immense loss.

Steve, may you rest in peace among all God's creatures both great and small.

Supposedly they were taping when he was attacked, his camera guy spooked the ray and it harpooned ol Steve. I guess it stuck in his heart, I heard he pulled out the spike. This would cause him to bleed out almost immediately.
