pachi's for the afterlife...
the wife and I went to oakland chinatown today, looking for red lanterns for our party next week.
attracted by a few lanterns, we stumbled upon what must have been the "after life" store.
in chinese tradition, you burn paper money at the ancestors' graves to either send them money, or pay off the bad spirits. you go annually in the spring and put out plates of food, some tea and rice, and burn incense.
when it's done, we eat the duck or pork and head to a restaurant for a banquet.
so, in this store, we found mockups of clothing, cellphones, boom boxes, food (roast duck, lobster and other traditional chinese dishes), cars, houses, bridges, and EVEN a SLOT machine.
chinese people love to gamble, so now we can send the gparents SLOTS and money to gamble with.
isn't it reassuring to know that we CAN take our pachi's with us?
