Unhappy Sad weekend at our house

Our hearts are breaking here this weekend.
Our beloved 13 year old dog Zeke is on his last few days
He has been having problems with his mobility for some time now but since Saturday he has been barely able to move, we have had to carry him to go outside and he has been slowly losing his faculties.
He has been eating and drinking very little and we are just counting the hours now, just trying to make him as comfortable as possible.
I know a lot of people on here are animal lovers and I just wanted to share what has been happening with him, it's never easy saying goodbye to our pets.

Here is a picture of him in happier times, he used to love just laying in the grass on his back.

Very sorry to hear this. The chewable baby aspirin is a great idea to help.

We have had him on Tramadol for pain since Saturday
I have had to carry him outside all day because he cannot walk under his own power for more than a few feet at a time and even then, he is very unsteady.
My wife and I have made the decision to take him to the vet in the morning, it's very hard to see him suffering and we don't want to prolong the pain for him any longer.
It's going to be a very rough night tonight for him and us, but it is time to let him go.

Sorry to hear about your buddy Raymond. Not sure what they have around your way, but before we left Az, we used a vet that came to the house. It was a very good experience for everyone, and not all ugly and sterile like the vets office. Would highly recommend it if it's available to you.

Raymond, I am so very sorry to hear about Zeke

I'm sure he knows that you are doing your very best for him, dogs are clever, they sense and know a lot of things often before we do

Take comfort in your happy memories and that he led a good long life and was so loved and well cared for.

Well...we took Zeke to the vet today and as it turns out, he is in bad shape but not quite as bad as we thought he was.
The vet took one look at the way he was laying on the examination table and started pinching between his toes...with no reaction from Zeke at all.
He asked us if he had fallen down any stairs or had any trauma to his neck, and we said no.
He said he has what he called a thrombosis to his neck which causes paralysis...could be a vertebrae out of place or possibly a tumor that is causing it. He said that it is not something fatal normally, except if it is caused by a cancerous tumor.
So he gave him a steroid shot and said to check his reflexes by pinching him after a few hours...so we brought him home and waited and tried it and to our surprise, he flinched every time except on his right hind leg, which is the leg that he has been having problems with for some time now.
We called the vet and he said that is a really good sign but not to get our hopes up yet. So we went back to get a bottle of steroids and we have to start him on them right away and see what happens...so we have our fingers crossed. Also the good new is that the vet said he should not be in much pain from this because it is a paralyzing type of injury.
He is also eating a little bit of food now for the first time since Sunday night.
We just have to take it one day at a time and see how he responds. And if he responds well, the vet wants him back there in a few days for a more thorough examination.
We are not expecting a miracle but we do have some hope.
Thank you for all the well wishes guys

Well, that's good news. He may not make a full recovery but at least you'll have some more time with him. Dogs are like little people. Sadly, their lives seem to be too short for all the joy they bring.

Well some bad news for us...Zeke died this morning.
I was up until 5AM with him and I did not have a good feeling about him, although we held some hope that he would somehow come out of this ok, his body just shut down on him.
We camped out in the family room with him on his favorite couch and us on the floor next to him. I had originally intended on going to work today if he was doing ok.
My wife is practically inconsolable and I am running on fumes...it has not really sunk in for me yet. But we have comfort knowing that he had a great life and our 2 other dogs are giving us comfort as well.
We do not have any children, so these dogs are like our kids.
It's so hard to lose a pet and I cannot even imagine what it would be like to lose a child.
Thanks again for all your kind words.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our faithful beagle of 14 years much in the same way. He was healthy and full of life until his last 2-3 days, then he lost his mobility and went downhill fast. I have said goodbye to two beloved pets in the past year, so I know how hard it is and what you are going through. Keep Zeke alive and well in your heart and memories, and know that he loved you both and appreciated the life you gave him.

Sorry to hear about your doggie, it really sounded like things were on the upswing. We lost ours earlier this year but still have 3 cats running around. Our own kids are grown up, so they are our kids in the house these days.
