Default Star Wars Glass Panel cracked

Firstly I am new to this forum and thanks to Daverob and Hanabi for recommending. I have 6 pinbal tables and just aquired a star wars pachinko (sanko).
The inside glass panel is cracked and wondered if spare parts can be sourced or is it a do it yourself item. Took the unit down to my local Glass place and have 2 choices. Relace with a sealed unit (to prevent moisture) as per existing with laminated 3 & 4mm glass or replace with a solid 10.8mm piece. The first choice is expensive and the second I am concerned about the weight in the door and also it will be slightly narrower which would mean a small gap at the front. Also concerned about breaking the plastic frame, so can these be sourced as a spare part.
Can anyone recommend which way to go or about the spares.

Also thanks to the forum as have read about the volume controls and am going to get some l-pads but can they be sourced in the UK as I can only find them in the US. Need to get acouple as a mate has a LOTR pachinko.

    Cheers Tony

    Welcome to PachiTalk Tony!!

Never had to replace a sealed glass unit myself, but hopefully other members that have replaced similar units can assist you with your dilemma

    Hi Tony,
First of all welcome to PachiTalk.
As for the volume control, I always use Potentiometers from Maplin's.
Part number JM81C cost about 70p each much eaiser than an L pad to fit.
I have just fitted one on my new Lord of the rings with no problems.
I have these on all of my machines and have not had one fail ( Yet )
I have sent some to another member on this sight a few months ago and he has also had no problems.
    Hope this helps Derek.

    welcome to pachitalk!

I, too, was going to recommend using a resistor pot. just have to have ones that will handle the power going through them.

the purists use L pads, since they maintain the same impedance while you change your volume. I haven't really heard of anyone doing a side by side comparison for quality of sound one way or the other.

do, however, put the output from the pachinko on the low setting going into the resistors, as this way they don't have to dissipate so much power and get as hot.

I would think one of the members might have a spare window? otherwise, you could check at YJA (yahoo japan). don't know if the shipping is more to the UK than to the US? would prob. be around $50 to ship a window to here.

one other thought, would a solid acrylic sheet work for the window? it would be a lot cheaper to cut, lighter, and usually just as clear.

say, what pins do you have? I am tempted, but fortunately no room for them right now.

Hi, thanks for the info. Looking at using the Pot from Maplins as suggested earlier in the thread.
I am sure shipping and handling along with buying a new glass from Japan would work out far more expensive than paying the money to replace the glass. The quotes were around £50 for the sealed unit and £25 for the thick glass. Bearing in mind the sealed unit is half what I paid for the machine. Also I have been advised that perspex is not very good as the balls mark/damage it.
The pins I have at the moment are Monster Bash, Attack From Mars, Scared Stiff, Star Wars Data East, The Getaway, Space Invaders(project), and also storing an Indiana Jones for a friend.
By the way do they do a Star Wars Pachislo

    Cheers Tony

My personal opinion?? I would pay the £50, it's worth it!!

because Star wars is such a favourite in my own home, it's the only one that is permanently mounted in a wall cabinet in my living room

Yes they do a Star Wars Pachislo!!
I would love to add that to my collection!!

Here's the link to the Research Centre listing, although to get one to the UK your would most likely need to import from Japan

PachiTalk Research Center - Sankyo - Star Wars - PachiTalk

I only have 2 pinballs at the moment, both the PB2K models, but I am hoping to add a few more in the future too, you have some great titles there

Thanks for the info Ang. Will get the Star Wars sorted out with the Glass and volume controls and start looking out for the Pachislo. As you might have guessed I am a closet Star Wars fan.

    Yes but it's Star Wars!!

My pachinkos will still outnumber the pachi-no-nos

think I'm at 6 pachislos and about 10 pachinkos??

I'm thinking the ratio should be at least 2 : 1 so that means I will just HAVE to buy more pachinkos to balance it

    Hi Todler,

Welcome to PachiTalk. Sorry to hear about your broken glass in a Lumina frame. Expensive to get replaced.
I have a Julie Pinball that arrived with a cracked glass when I purchased it, Thanks to UPS. I had the glass replaced by a local glass shop.
One piece of tempered glass installed in the frame cost me $150.00 USD to replace. They did a good job though. So don't be surprised at the cost of this glass.

    Hi Todler, Welcome to Pachitalk!

Sorry to hear your glass is cracked on the lumina frame. You may be able to get away with having a new piece of flat glass cut to fit (tempered should not be needed and is more expensive), and then just hope for the best on the moisture. I'm not sure about where you are, but here I can get a flat glass panel cut for under $5.00 US at my local hardware store. If moisture is a problem drilling a couple of vent holes in the plastic around the edges may help. You may be able to get a replacement through one of the vendors like Rita from bluehotaru.com at a reasonable price.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Was the glass about 11mm thick, if so was the weight a problem for the door. As mentioned earlier I can get a solid piece of glass for half the price of the double panel sealed unit.

    Cheers Tony
