Default So much for that idea...

I thought I was really smart in quieting my pachinko machine through the careful placement of thin strips of closed-cell foam. Well, today the machine jammed up. The payout motor wouldn't turn, and when I looked at it there were little black specks all over everything. My hunch is that the closed-cell foam was coming apart, and depositing itself on the balls.

So, an hour spent taking apart the machine and cleaning all the parts. And now it's all loud again.

    I need to build a sound-proof enclosure.

Well even if you quiet the noise from the back, the balls on nails are still going to make noise. You could always turn up your volume.

    Hello ,
I think if you will Wall Mounted your Pachinko it will be much more quit , these wooden frames can be bought on eBay and I already heard that it will fit in your Pachinko in a complete wooden case , I didn`t test this but I think its very normal that the sound will be softer when placing them in a wooden Frame .

    Regards Jan

It makes me wonder how loud a parlour must be, with all those machines at full volume playing at once. I'm surprised that you're not deaf Rupan. Rupan?? I said I'm surp....oh never mind!

It only has one pane of glass in the door... as a matter of fact, it isn't glass, it's plexiglass (well, a plastic of some type anyway).

I have shooter's ear plugs, but it's the neighbors I'm worried about.

First take out that P-glass and get two window glass panes cut to match and slide them in the two tracks and it will be alot quieter.

Just 1/8 will do fine, have them on their sander remove the sharp edges to save on your skin.

That's interesting, on my vintage machine I put P-glass on the inner and window glass on the outer, with the theory that the occasional time a ball jumps and hits it would be a less harsh ping, and also not break the glass (the trick to breaking glass is point pressure, such as can be had with a ball).

From what I have been able to research, when the first wave of pachinkos came across in the 70's they were mostly shipped either with only a plexiglass window, or no window (which then had a plexiglass window put in before sale. I'm guessing that the glass would be damaged on the voyage, and the resellers wanted the lowest cost to refurb.

Unfortunately I have no other machine to compare it against for quietness of the theory.

From an acoustic theory stand point, when audio waves pass through layers of dissimilar densities, it tends to absorb them better.

Try Arbys glass suggestion, it WILL quiet the machine down. Additionally, if you can, put a small (about 1/2 inch square) piece of sponge between the 2 glass panes. One in each corner, behind the trim. This presses the glass against the frame and quiets the machine even more. Who would guess that the loose glass would contribute to the overall noise level, but it does.

I tried the two pieces of glass, and websherpa's advice hold true. A plane of glass on the outside and p-glass on the inside is quieter than two panes of glass. You may want to try it, arby!

I also tried DrDark's suggestion with some foam.

websherpa's point is very true, I just like the all glass. In the begaining I thought the glass would have to be glass like in the car side windows, Tempered Glass.

But I found reg. window glass works best and the cost is very cheap. I have not broke any yet.

Now on machines I send out, if they come with a round portal double glass in a plastic frame, of course stay with it. But if it comes with loose glass or none I replace for shipping both with brand new P-glass, adter a time it does scrach up some and the buyer can go out and buy cut window glass.

    Just what I do.

The sponge in the four corners works well, really easier than lining with plastic tape all the way around each pane of glass.

All great ideas! Thank you for the sponge or tape trick. Although I must say the vintage machines appear to be whole lot less noisey (maybe it's just the fewer # of balls being shot). I did find the sound of the balls hitting glass objectionable (or at least made me cringe).

It's true that the plexi does scratch eventually and it's more expensive than 1/4 float glass, each to his or her own preference I guess.

I used to regularly hit the glass on pinball machines, with the pinballs, it was plate glass, not tempered, but I never broke one (a couple dents though...).
