Default Door Hinged on Wrong Side?

I came across this auction and noticed that the cell door is hinged on the opposite side of any modern machine I've seen. Was there a concerted effort by manufacturers to do this? If so, any idea when?

Just curious as I think a change like this would have been messy in the parlors.
