    Default Pachinko illegal in Colorado

I wrote to the Colorado Division of Gaming and got this answer regarding the legality of pachinko machines:

"Pachinko games are considered slot machines under the definition of slot
machine in the Colorado Limited Gaming Act, and therefore are illegal for
individuals to own or sell without a gaming license."

I figured this to be true for pachislo, but it surprised me about pachinko.

Most people mix the two machines up and think pachinkos are slots

Yeah, and if you live in Colorado, you better not play any of the online Pachinko or Pachislo simulations, either!

I gave a link to the Wikipedia article on Pachinko so they wouldn't be able to confuse the two.

Thanks, but I don't think that helps. I read the Colorado statue, and it would clearly cover pachinko machines as well.

Do they outlaw those toy "bank type" slot machines as well? I think people really need to write the law makers in their states that have these laws to get them off the books. Why would any machine used in your own home for personal recreation be illegal? Yet they allow casinos that actually take peoples money? (I am not against casinos and think they should be allowed)
    and a few others.

Minnesotabrad, it is NUTS. Why did the people allow the people they elected to pass a lot of the bad laws out there? Politics... it stinks.

I'm pretty sure it's only MODERN pachinko that could possibly be illegal here in CO. Vintage pachinko, which has no slot feature, has to be okay.

Here's the rub: they really do have to catch you with it. Which would mean trying to run a "for profit" operation with it.

So far, they've set up a bank of machines the past few years at Nan Desu Kan here, and I have yet to see state gaming officials swoop in and confiscate the machines as an illegal gambling operation. Granted, you pay $5 for a cup of balls with no expectation given of you trading winnings back in for prizes or cash.

By a strict "letter of the law", yes, it is probably illegal in most states for one to own (privately or otherwise) a pachinko machine, just on account of bans on gambling in general. But from a spirit of the law perspective, I'm thinking they're mostly concerned about someone setting up some sort of gaming operation, which is where those laws are really aimed at. But if you actually ask on such, they do answer on the letter, because it gives no wiggle room when they prosecute on the spirit of it.

This is nice to know! The girlfriend and I were just talking about taking a trip to Denver to visit a friend and see the mountains. She loves Anime and I've gotten her into pachinko too, we might try to make the trip during this convention. How's the weather there in September?

The weather is alright... that's really the beginning of what I like to call "tights weather". It'll be warm enough during the day, but I'd recommend having at least a light jacket for the evenings.
