New Years Tradition...

So, we'uns down in south USA eat Black Eyed Peas on the 1st day of the year for good luck through the rest of the year.
I was wondering what other traditions others follow across the Globe. Uh...ya'll.

I always start the new year with an old silver dollar in my hand, its supposed to bring you good fortune money wise in the coming year.

no Black eye peas or pickled herring for me

Here in Greece . we start the year by cutting a Vassilopita it is a cake dedicated to st. Basil.

anyway the head of the family takes this cake makes a cross on the cake and starts cutting pieces.

first piece is for christ
second piece is for the needy (the poor)
third piece is for the head of the house hold
and then the rest of the cake is cut into pieces with each piece being given to a member of the family in order of importance.
for example
mother
oldest child
second child
etc first its the family of the one cutting the cake and then any friend etc that may be visiting etc.

anyway.. inside this cake is a coin the person who finds the coin will have good luck for that year...

Sour kraut and polish sausage at our house, I know, I live in Texas but the black eye pea thing is silly to me, we have always had kraut and sausage. Different strokes for different folks.

I make it with a can of beer for extra flavor.

By the way, I just finished watching Phantom of the Opera!
I admit, it aint Space Ghost on ice, but it was pretty durn good!

The past six years that I spent in Japan I had to eat Japanese traditional New Year's food called osechi ryouri:

That's one of the few reasons I'm glad to be back in the U.S.

Sure will miss my fiancee's father giving us Kobe and Matsuzaka steaks though.
