I can get companion passes for myself. When I came back from Japan, it only cost me about $150.

$150 is cheap, my mom use to work for Delta and we could get tickets almost anywhere for like $10

You're all very kind...I will write more details on the trip in the next day or two. But in the meantime, one major difference from my last visit in 1993 was a apparently greater assimilation of the western influences into the Japanese mainstream; for example, we entered McDonald's locations three times (once for soda, rest and WC, once for breakfast sandwiches (same as US) and once for the (new?) "Filet O Shrimp" (rupan knows the name, I'm sure), where shrimp are magically coalesced into a pattie form and served in a sandwich-not bad). It was much harder to see other exotic items because in two of the three locations there was NO ENGLISH MENU easily (!!!); just a picture menu. 12 years ago the overhead item list was in English; now not only is it all in Japanese but you'd be hard pressed to see more than a handful of English words in the store!

Don't worry though, nearly all menu items, as elsewhere where western food is served, are present in the Japanese language in close equivalents to the English, as borrow words. If I had been diligent in memorizing the very kana I referred to once upon a time here, I could have read the menu.

I believe over the years I have had every possible foodstuff in a McDonalds; that Teriyaki burger last trip to Japan, a burrito once in Mexico, fried chicken in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (which, not any location in the South or even Watts (which has an intersection with a mere three of four corners with fast food chicken), I swear, is the fried chicken capital of the world...their only mall had FOUR places for fried chicken (licensed KFC, "California Fried Chicken" (descendant of Pioneer), "Texas Fried Chicken" (I haven't seen it in Texas), and McD's). Amazing...I found this link to prove it: http://www.dejava.com/yogya/rescuisines.htm

Not to mention all the regional stuff they have around the US (lobster rolls in Maine etc. etc.) that some of you, I'm sure, are well aware of...

I'm using too many parentheses. I'm looking up absurd links. I'm going to bed.

Azlew you may have something there...the only drawback to Japan is the quite long flight. From Hawaii, at times, Northwest/JALWays/ANA (Air Japan)/United battle it out for Japan. Using miles to take a Hawaii trip with an extension to Japan doesn't sound bad at all to me...not to mention that it could open up unusual routing possibilities flying between Hawaii and Japan (Guam, Saipan, etc.)

If you've got America West miles they will be good to Japan (through StarAlliance on United) sometime in 2006 due to the merger with USAirways, so that could be another angle.

I think this group trip idea is interesting...if it was done outside the high seasons next year (and arranged far enough in advance) I bet costs could be fairly well contained. I think some of the time could be "group outings" and some free time...for non stop Pachinko playing of course...or something else?

Did I mention Tokyo DisneySea? Very cool. Nothing like it in the other Disney parks. Oops...that is for later...

I did say my wife wants to return, right? And my daughter wants to go?

Can we take turns walking backwards in front of the group holding a flag?

    Some airfares from Honolulu:

    http://dps1.travelocity.com/airgchoi...ll&FromTF=true

    From LAX:

    http://dps1.travelocity.com/airgchoi...ll&FromTF=true

    From PHX:

    http://dps1.travelocity.com/airgchoi...ll&FromTF=true

And replace the airport code with your own for more. Cedar Rapids, as a random example , comes up at $602 including taxes round trip to Tokyo! Of course the best time to book this will be around January 3 for travel after that, but it is interesting to see what the fares should drop to...

FTR, that McDonalds sandwich is called an "Ebi (shrimp) Filet-O" and is on the official McDonalds of Japan webpage now. I've never had this one but many fast food restaurants have the equivalent.

...and the thing is, you'd only save $100-$200 or so by going in the box...if you got your weight down to that of a pachinko! But you might have a little more room...

But you could always use the box to sleep in once you got there!
Think of the money you'd save.
