    Default Popeye Pachislo?

Has anyone had a chance to play the Popeye Pachislo from Sammy yet? I saw the picture in the museum and have seen Milt's description at Stealth, but that seems to be it so far. Comments?

Here's the official page (Japanese) if you want to get an idea of what it's like:

King Camel is nice with reversing and nudging reels, the small reels on top are the real reels that determine odds and payout, the bottom ones are just for teasing.

but, I like the larger LCD screens,

Between large LCD models Popeye, Tekken and Gamera, I like Gamera best.

I briefly played this machine yesterday. It has an ENORMOUS gorgeous LCD. I couldn't quite get used to Popeye talking in Japanese with a different voice though.

I got one of these from 777Heaven in the UK last month! Still playing it and trying all the different odds settings to see what happens...

Its a very VERY cute looking machine and the huge LCD really looks stunning! As said earlier in the topic, the characters all talk in Japanese so the voices are a bit different although they really do have Olive's squeaky whine down to a tee!! Also, everytime something in the background catches Popeye's eye, he says "Non-doh, non-doh!" in a gruff Japanese voice that makes me giggle; my friends have taken this phrase to their hearts and keep saying it when I see them so I hope its complimentary! At the end of the fever round, he sings "Im Popeye the sailor man (Toot toot!)" in English which is a nice nod to the original.

The animation is classic stuff, with Bluto grabbing Olive and running off with her as she shrieks and flaps her arms like a manic Stick Insect - the fight scenes also cant fail to raise a smile with poor old Popeye crashing into mountains and dropping from high altitudes in his dogged pursuit of his beloved. Sweetpea also makes a few guest appearances and although I havent seen him, Im really hoping that burger-chomping Wimpey is hiding in there somewhere too.

The internal gubbins are also of a very high standard. A very agressive and efficient hopper plus modular reels which come out individually all add to the high-quality feel of the unit and it comes across as very solid, clean and reliable package. The LEDs arrays on the front add to the polished effect although the green-with-red-spots lighting around the top and sides makes it slightly festive and reminds me of Christmas whenever it lights up!

Comparing it to the Beast Sapp machine I have, there are only two things that I dont like... Firstly, there is no graphical 'projection' onto the reels when you get a winning line. On Beast, Bob flexes his muscles or the symbols catch fire, etc. The other thing is that Popeye makes it obvious that in order to reach Bluto and Olive, you have to start at the woodlands and cross the mountains before reaching the sea stage. As such, Popeye spends alot of his time plodding through the woods with his dog "Eugene the Jeep". (Perhaps some might see that as a good thing as when you hop onto the next stage, it slowly builds the excitement towards the chance of a fever mode.... I find it a bit frustrating though!). Sure, its playable but I'm not sure it'll outlive my Beast Sapp in the long run.

All in all, its a loveable machine and certainly has the 'Wow factor' when you see it. Each and every one of my friends has been really impressed just by looking at it and if you want the chance to show off a bit then this is the machine for you....in a word - gorgeous!!

    Cheers,

    Foxy
