Default Working on a new cabinet design

Actually, it's mostly done, but I'm going to redesign the drawer for the other nearly-built cabinet - square isn't the best for picking up a handfull of balls, they keep escaping to the corners.

you can find my original cabinets here: http://www.pachitalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4790

I've been thinking about this for a while after I built my first three cabinets with that strange glass bottom storage area with the slot for releasing balls, and I pretty much came to agree completely with Tulsa - it'd be better if the whole bottom area was about being able to reach in with your left hand while your right was on the handle. So, a couple of odd ramps and improvised, stuck-on drawers later, we have this:

I've changed the top as well, there's just no need for a four thousand ball capacity above the machine, and anything over a thousand starts to bow out the acrylic a bit. So this one just has that little "V" design at top, and when I manage to get out to home depot again and get another sheet of Lexan I'll pop up a picture of how it looks full of balls. There's a short length of PVC pipe running through a hole in the top shelf there and it stops just short of the pachinko reward hopper. I didn't intend for this to be a freestanding case, it's got the sharp edge in the back for french cleats on the wall, but it works just fine on a box or whatever.

Here's a movie of the cabinet in action - http://www.cityofsand.com/pachinko/newcabinet.mov - it's 29 meg, but godaddy.com just this month upped my bandwidth limit to 250 gigabytes of transfer. There's no way I'll ever touch that, so snag away.
I'll try and put up some pics of the inside ramps and such later this week.

Inspired partly by Syphs original cabinets I went about building my own.

I took pics of the building proses, so if anyone is interested I can through together a how to.

I'm still working on some stuff with them but they work pretty well.

    MrGneiss,

I love your cabinets. If you don't mind, I'd love to see a "how-to" post. Your cabs and Syph's are nearly identical to what I was planning on designing/building. Thanks for beating me to the punch!

Ok I will force myself to make up a how to.

I am extremely lazy so knowing that people are waiting for it should help motivate me.

Take your time... I'm in the middle of constructing some built-in bookshelves, then painting two bedrooms, the gameroom... AND THEN the boss says I can build my Pachinko cabinets!

    Cordially,

You could make the drawer more a place to hold a couple of plastic stackable trays, then you could pick the top tray up and dump it in the hopper. Then put it back in the stack on the bottom...

Your cabinet's look great! Are you going to stain the cabinet's at a later date, or keep them as is?.

the big flaw in most of these designs is that there are always going to be some balls floating around behind your machine that somehow managed not to drop, but WILL drop whenever it is most inconvenient for you. In my "Giant Brain Design Stage" I usually reject removable trays and drawers for just this reason...you pull out the drawer, balls drop behind it, you have to reach in and clear them out, you bang your knuckles, you kick the dog, it's mass chaos. Another wierd personal thing, I don't like padding trays and wow are they ever loud when you don't pad them.

...the real reason is that I like reaching in to a pile of balls to grab a handful with my left hand while my right stays on the shootah. That's right, just me and my balls having some alone time.

Thanks! I'll probably sand and stain them the same as my other ones from that other thread. I'm too lazy right now to even cut a small glass trapezoid for the top - all this stuff is on hold for me until I finish a few other projects or get banned from World of Warcraft.
