Well, that's what we heard it was going to do tomorrow or Thursday... 40 to 50 cents per gallon. And when we went out tonight to top off the tank, BLAM!!!
Now I wonder if it will STILL take that big hike!

Wow... from what you guys are saying, we'd better not just grab our knees tomorrow... but reach for our ankles!!!

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil rose for a third day in New York and gasoline reached a record after Hurricane Katrina shut refineries along the Gulf of Mexico and halted 95 percent of oil production in the region.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc said its 220,000 barrel-a-day Mars platform, equivalent to 15 percent of total U.S. Gulf oil output, suffered damage. Katrina crossed the U.S. coast Aug. 29 after closing the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, the largest U.S. oil import terminal. Refineries in Louisiana and Mississippi remain without power.

    ....

Crude oil for October delivery rose as much as 76 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $70.57 a barrel in after-hours electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was at $70.34 at 7:35 a.m. Singapore time.
Yesterday, the October contract reached $70.85, the highest intraday price since trading began in 1983, and closed at $69.81 a barrel, a 3.9 percent gain. Prices today are 67 percent higher than a year ago.

Gasoline for September delivery surged 41.39 cents, or 20 percent, to $2.4745 a gallon yesterday. The contract, which expires today, reached a record $2.55 in after-hours trading.

    ....

At least seven oil drilling rigs were adrift in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday and two companies said they couldn't find their rigs and platforms after Katrina plowed through the area.

    ....

The storm also shut 8.8 billion cubic feet of natural-gas output, equivalent to 88 percent of the total amount of gas produced in the Gulf, the Minerals Management Service said yesterday.
Natural gas for October delivery rose 52 cents, or 4.7 percent, to close at $11.659 per million British thermal units in New York, the highest since the contract was introduced in 1990. Futures touched $12.26 in after-hours trading today, a record intraday price.

Gas has to go above $3.11 before we go above the prices we had in the late 70s and early 80s when adjusted for inflation. We are not at the highest prices we have had yet.

The gas and gas-drilling companies are doing well. I have a couple of these and they are making up for losses in other areas. Diversify is the name of the game.

And people I know here ask why I keep that 30 foot motorhome with 120 gallons of gas tanks (full BTW) parked.

At the rate gas is going up, and if I keep StaBil in the tanks, which I do, in another week or two I could sell the gas for more than the RV!
