turns on, but nothing else seems to be active, no sound from the launcher when turned, etc. fuses are intact; everything looks okay.
what basic action can i expect from this kind of machine to indicate it is restore-able?

Where is the transformer? If you plugged it into the wall without one; probably killed it.

    It needs 24v not 110

Uh oh; Heiwas from that era have troublesome shooter control boards too.

i used a step down to plug it in. hmm the fuses are still good, the power light is on (and not dead), and i can hear the intake buzzing....

    what does "dead" really mean?

But I wonder if previous owner(s) knew that; if it wasn’t hard wired already.

By dead I meant some fried components from being plugged in to 110v at some point. Sometimes the fuse doesn’t save it. I’d inspect all the boards for damage and replug all the connectors.

Sounds like yours is only “mostly dead”

Well. It's a CR machine so it doesn't have the dreaded Heiwa B-1F shooter control board. If it has had 110v stuck in it. If your lucky just a protection diode may have blown. As well as any fuses.

I’m pretty sure I can see it in the lower right side; and it’s missing the dongle

Looks like a fun one in videos, I hope you can save it!!

Even without the dongle, the screen and stuff should still turn on!!

my decision is it is dead-dead. the red power light is on regardless of switch position and despite the hum of power there are no lights or signs of life anywhere whatsoever after checking all connections.
a bit too bad; all the components look to be clean and in good shape.
the ad did warn "power operation not confirmed" so short of having an electrician check all components on the intake board there's nothing for me to do.

That’s a shame; unfortunately if a machine doesn’t come with the proper transformer; and it’s not working; there’s a very high likelihood somebody tried plugging it in to 110 anyway.

All my 90s machines were hard wired to the transformer by the importer/dealer, except one I imported from Japan. Which saves a lot of machines….

i bought this one from japan.
the cost of shipping plus import tariff (canada) made it a high odds gamble from the start

Yikes; yeah risky for sure! I make sure “operation is confirmed” is mentioned; most Japanese seem pretty honest.

Speaking of yahoo auctions; operation confirmed… Apollo 1 became available overnight!

Well. With a basic volt meter you should be able to confirm if power is leaving the main board. Most of the components at the top relate to outputs to the parlour equipment. I would unscrew it and check on the other side of the board. The check for any voltages coming out of it to the rest of the machine.

Not make you sound daft. What size transformer are you using to drop it down to 24vac. Also it is outputting AC voltage, not DC (It's been done before)

These things happen unfortunately, I’ve been burned a couple times, so now stick to my preferred vendor who tests the machines prior to shipment. JT Comatz. Much better track record at receiving working machines as advertised vs cells/machines I’ve purchased off yahoo auctions. That’s for sure. Fool me once…

    It’s for yahoos indeed…

They had a couple early 90’s arepachi on their warehouse stock list last time I checked

But yeah; they are 99% newer machines. There’s some good retro new ones that emulate the old ones but added features and importantly; reliability! This way you get all the fun of the originals without sitting on a ticking time bomb of 30+ year old components
