The Sanyo Comet II See-saw

Only slightly less infamous than the trolly problem, the Sanyo Comet II see-saw has a reputation of unreliability so well known it usually precedes the machine. I own a Comet II in complete* condition, and I’d venture to guess that the see-saw prize mechanism works about 45% of the time. My house guests are told they’re allowed to play, as long as they don’t win.
I’ve heard stories of fishing weights, pennies, even modifications to the ball track itself! But specifics to these stories seem hard to come by. So I want to hear what you’ve done to solve this problem! Should I run a rope and pulley overtop the cabinet?
