Default How do I remove the metal rails from the playfield

I’m having a problem removing the metal rails from the playfield. I straightened the pins on the back side, but the rails still won’t come out. I don’t want to force them and break anything. What is the trick?C36A3867-B9F4-4C2D-B4F3-878A164A3166.jpeg

I hammer them out halfway once straightened, then use curved needle nose pliers to pull and pry them out. If they get damaged, you can just replace by using stainless steel wire.

Or you can just cut them off from the rear prior to removal and just use the stainless steel wire instead to replace since it it’s pain to remove them all without damaging any in my opinion. That’s the fastest way to do it. Also looks better if they are rusty. Just depends on the condition of the pins and how patient you are.

I straighten them on the backside, then grip them with needle nose pliers and push the wires towards the front while puling on the rails one at a time. Once I get a little bit of a gap between the rails and the playfield, I grip the wires on the front side and rock the pliers kind of like a lever against the playfield to pry them up, working my way along the rail from wire to wire.

This video was helpful to me as well.

once you get a little space between the rail and the playfield, insert a small nail puller and pry the rail up. place somehting like a credit card underneath the tool to protect the playfield surface and work your way along the length of the rail lifting a bit at a time.

What type of stainless steel wire are you using?

I put my wires in a tumbler along with my brass nails, they come out really nice and shiny. I do have a small roll of stainless steel safety lock wire (.032 in / 0.81 mm) I got off of Amazon, someone recommended it in another thread on this board.

I remove the rails, pretty much the same way, as the video shows that Sparky Kilowatt posted.

I always replace the old wires with new wires. So, I cut the old wires off flush with the playfield. There is less wire to pull up and the rails pull up easier.

I replace the old wires with Stainless Steel cotter pins. (1/16 inch X 1- 1/2 inch) https://www.ebay.com/itm/164700377555
Just flatten the head of the cotter pin with a pair of pliers.

Once you put the rail back on, I bend the wires over the original holes and cut the wire about 3/16" past the holes. Using a small pair of angled needle nose pliers, bend the tip of wire 90 degrees, to the original hole and hammer it in.
