Here's a search on Ebay for Step Counter:

These are generally the same thing they sell on Yahoo Japan Auctions to hook up to Pachislo's to count one of the following-Token in,out,BB,RB CT. Just crack em open and find the switch that makes the counter count and hook a couple of wires from that to the correct connector on the machine. You would need several to count everything. These are inexpensive and resettable. Some are programable, might be about to figure out how many calories you burned or how many miles you moved to press buttons/inserted tokens! Then there are the ones with an FM radio built in, as if you could hear it over that BB music!
