    Here's a simple timer circuit:

    http://compirate.home.mindspring.com...s/P6180018.JPG

    http://compirate.home.mindspring.com...s/P6180020.JPG

    The 555 is a timer IC. C=capacitor, D=diode, R=resistor
All components are readily available at Radio Shack. Just figure how to hook the hopper through the relay and adjust R1 till it spits out the number you'd like. 9v could come from one of those nifty radio batteries (are there any radios that still use these or are they considered 'smoke alarm' batteries now?) Find some place good for the switch (S1) without drilling the face of the dispenser, you might want to 'keep it real'!

    That's a great book.
I think they carry it at Radio Shack... at least they used to.
They used to carry his mini-notebooks, too.

At the RatShack near us, if I went in and asked for that book they'd say, "Ummmm.. THIS is a book... is it the same one?"
Same thing they do with other stuff... "Ummm... THIS is a transformer... is it the same one?"
Makes ya wanna do nasty things to them!

    Wow... now there's a throwback!
Heathkit saw the bigger bucks in education, I think. I have a couple of their trainers in my classroom... about 5 years old, but they haven't sent a rep around for a while. But I also have a tube shortwave radio and a metronome that I built from their kits back in the "good ol' days".
I always wanted to build their organ kit or the television. But then, I was young and poor. Now I'm old and poor... and they're not around.

Lafayette? Still got my HB-525A... first CB I ever owned, "Good Buddy!".
It's gone through hell and back, but I can't seem to throw it away. Just sits there on a shelf throwing memories at me. 23 channels of fun! But hasn't seen power in years.
    They had some good stuff!

If places like that were still around (not just through mail-order), we'd have a lot more people learning this stuff, willing and able to tinker!

You are very correct, Logic. Those Heathkits and the stuff Radio Shack started out selling would have got a lot of kids interested in electronics these days. Good memories!

I'm gazing at the pic of this controller board now...
And it's so hard to tell without having it live, but...

I would guess that yellow relay triggers a solonoid down in the token dispenser mech? I can't tell from the pic... what voltage is that relay... 12v? (Most relays I've seen for PC boards are blue = 5v, and yellow = 12v)

Right above that is a jumper for the relay contacts... selecting NO or NC.
With the unit powered on, what happens when you pull that jumper for a moment, and put it back on? Does the solonoid click to dispense a token?
How about if you put it on the other set of contacts for a moment? (The NC side... connecting left to center). Does that trigger the solonoid?
Remember to put it back on as you found it... once you try it out.

    If that doesnt' do anything...

Looking at the next thing up... the white 4 pin IC. A common package for an optical isolator. One side is probably 5v from the logic, and the other (output) might be controlling the 12v to that relay? A pulse on the input side (or a short... but be CAREFUL!) might trigger that relay... which picks the solonoid... which dispenses a token... that lives in the house that Jack built.

How many tokens are dispensed at once? One per pulse?

    Proceed at your own risk.
I give NO warranty for "eye" work.

That's the thing, these aren't cheap and not easy to come by, I haven't the nerve to experiment yet.
One unfortunate thing about the circuit board is it's on the back of the unit which, when inserted back in the dispensor, makes it impossible to tell whats going on. Everything would have to be dissassembled and laid out on a workbench to reach everything while it's working. It's a very modular system, I assume so that if something isn't working you simply unplug it and replace with a working part, then fix or trash the broken one. The actual acceptor unit unplugs from the circuit/power supply unit and the hopper unplugs as a unit also.

    FRONT:

    REAR:
    http://compirate.home.mindspring.com...s/P6180002.JPG

    ACCEPTOR INSIDE:
    http://compirate.home.mindspring.com...s/P6180006.JPG

    1. Bill insertion switches
    2. Magnetic pickups
    3. Bill has passed sensors switches
    4. Optical sensors
(and yes, that is a Care Bear music box in the background. Those I can figure out! Fixing it for a friend)

    The relay says:

    NAIS
    DS1E-M-DC24V
    AG20144
    0.6A 125V AC
    0.6A 110V DC
    2A 30V DC

The white 'thingy' (If I get too technical, let me know!):

    9C:
    P227G

I think the hopper runs the same as the units in the pachislo's. There is only an on/off for the motor and an optical sensor for dispense count. When the correct number of tokens pass the sensor, the motor is stopped. This relay MAY control that motor. Or it may control the motor/s on the bill acceptor (also 24v).

There is a good size heat sink at the top of the board with 2 components labeled '7805' and '8429'. The first is 3 pin, the second is 12 pin. If this means anything.

The board combines the count and acceptor circuitry together. When a bill is accepted, it spits out 50 tokens and the count is displayed on the front of the unit. I have 2 more of these coming by slow boat, maybe when they show up I'll be brave enough to try some things, until then I'm still investigating counterfeiting. The only other solution to a timer circuit or copying a bill is to reprogram the acceptor but I think the rom may have the programing for the counter also, and I don't know how to reprogram an acceptor rom anyway. Maybe I'll go to Japan someday and spend my 4000yen on a cup of coffee!

I did see on the board that the latest date was 1/95 so it's 10 years old.

Spent some good money on an Olympus C-60 Zoom so I'm gonna use it somemore!

    Hopper pics:
    Overall hopper:

    Bottom showing motor (not stepper):
    http://compirate.home.mindspring.com...s/P6190005.JPG

    Back showing connector:

    Label:
    http://compirate.home.mindspring.com...s/P6190008.JPG

Appears to be just a motor. Of the 9 connections on the back, 2 are grounds, 1 is a hopper empty connection, 4 are for the optical count sensor and the other 2 are for the motor. If just the motor is run, some sort of fuse/circuit breaker would be necessary in the event of a jam to prevent the motor burning out.

Yeah... I don't blame you a bit for not wanting to poke around too much.
I'm sure they aren't cheap... and NOT something you can find at the corner store!

So much for the yellow = 12v theory... it's obviously a 24v relay. The other numbers are for current ratings of the contacts at different voltages.

The 7805 is easy... +5v regulator. IGO - In, Ground, Out. Spotted that one earlier. That's probably supplying +5 to the logic on the board.

The 8429??? Nothing I see a cross on. Might be able to find a replacement, but as far as a data sheet... pffft. It's pretty hefty and looks like it's a power item riding on that heat-sink. An amp/comparitor/driver??? Motor control for the acceptor??? Dunno.

Same pffft goes with the P227G. Can find plenty of them to buy on Taiwan websites, but no spec sheets. I'd be willing to bet it's an opto-isolator, though. On the pachinkos that I have that don't have a dongle, you'll find one of these with two pins shorted with a blob of solder... after the "tech" has burned through the plastic case with a soldering iron.

If it were me (and it surely isn't), that might be the spot I'd try to short. I'd take a look at a similar DIP on a pachinko, and see which two pins they have shorted there. I'd connect a PBNO to that spot, re-assemble it, push the button... and shout if it works... or cry if it smokes. :17:

    But that's me. I'm crazy.

But wait... you say it's a motor that turns to spit out tokens... like the one in a pachislo hopper? Couldn't you just wire that motor to the power directly (through a switch) to get it to spit tokens? Or is an exact count important here?

It does work with the YEN notes you have?

By the way... great explanation... and super pics!

BINGO! If a count isn't too important, that sounds like the ticket!

I just got two regular hoppers to piddle with as time permits. Screw that optical stuff (maybe?)... and going to use a microswitch to drive a counter that's encoded to turn off a relay driving the motor. Either that, or a small PIC chip?

Yeah... another one of those "as time permits" thingys.

(Great photos again, compirate... it's like being there!)

It works fine with the notes I have only you have to open it up every couple of times to retrieve them to reuse.
Yes, it seems to be just a regular motor (24v DC). I figured the timer circuit could have a pot on it to adjust the time and spit out X tokens in Y seconds (all those years of algebra pay off!). I'm sure it would be +/- a couple every now and then, but it dosen't really matter, unless your a purist. And the display on the front won't do anything either. The upper white connector is from the power supply and might be 24v (2 orange plus, 2 black minus).

For me it would be Diet Mt Dew-tastes the same but no sugar buzz! Doin' the low carb thing (No potatoes, bread, pasta and diet drinks/crystal light/water- Lost 80lbs since the first of the year!). I can have some every now and then but not like I use to. Still eat plenty of everything else though.

I'm not a programmer (a little basic about 20 years ago) but couldn't 1 or more hoppers be controlled by the parallel port of a computer? Relays to control on/off and a simple input for count. One more input for a 'dispense' switch and the hopper runs till X tokens is dipensed. A little extra programming and you can keep a record of how many have been dispensed. I may have to work on this sometime (like you, after 2000 other projects!)

Thanks, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. There are some low carb pastas out there, cost about 2-3 times as much though. It's pretty hard as a truck driver when you stop for fuel and the entire snack aisle is off limits! 95% is some form of bread/potatoe/sugar. Usually get a few packs of some kind of overpriced lunch meat and a hunk of cheese and a gallon of water and on my way!

My 2 have shipped, just 2-3 months to wait! Have to watch the pacific weather and see that my ship makes it here (no, I don't know what ship). What other charge are you talking about?
