    Talking First Time Pachinko Owner

    Hey guys-
First I want to say thanks for all of the info I have read on this site prior to registering. The little bit of info I have found has been huge in understanding my first machine. I hope that I use the correct terminology when describing my issues! I have a mid-70s Sankyo that seems to be pretty commonplace. I bought it off a guy on Facebook marketplace who didn't know much about it, but wanted it to go to a good home. I promised him I would be in touch in the future to share a finished restoration with him (but is it ever truly finished??). I purchased it for $75 and it has been worth that money in the amount of fun I've had playing and tinkering with it in the last 5 days. I believe the machine is is above-average condition, so I don't feel too daunted in the task of restoring it for display in our basement "casino". I am a residential remodeler by day so I'm not afraid to dig in. I've also restored antique radios in the past, which I only hope doesn't hurt my odds of success. I've always been intrigued by pachinko machines...probably because my grandmother always had a non-working unit on the basement wall which my parents wouldn't let me keep when she passed away (I was already a sucker for thrift store electronics so my parents didn't want me hoarding a bunch of junk I didn't need). Now that I'm all grow'd up I can buy as much junk as I want!

**I'm having trouble loading photos- I've tried uploading .jpg files on both Chrome and Edge, but they both give me an error message when trying to upload.**

Some questions/talking points with the machine:

-The machine needs a good cleaning, but looks great overall. The playing fields graphics look sharp and don't seem faded. Despite the few problems I've found, the machine is able to play normally for at least a little while.

-My main problem is that the part that keeps tension on the supply ball chute is missing the spring and the metal piece is bent back and fastened under one of the plastic screw studs. This seems to be causing the balls to clog up around the bend in the chute. I can't put many balls in the machine without the balls stacking up and becoming clogged. The amount of balls I am able to safely use yields me about 3 jackpots before I need to add more. I've tried to locate these parts but have come up empty. I'm not 100% sure this is causing the problem, but its definitely the first place I'm starting. The shiny screws tell me that this was a recent hack attempt. This is my main concern with the machine, so any tips would be appreciated!!

-The far right tulip is iffy with getting clogged. I can drop a few balls in and about half of them end up clogging up. This is something that will probably be solved by a good cleaning, so I'm not too worried right now.

-The glass needs replaced, which I'll do last. I'm not sure what type to get, though. My understanding is that some have plexi on the inside and plate glass on the outside. Both are readily available but I'm not sure what's recommended. Also, what is the thickness of the glass?

-After the machine is thoroughly cleaned, what type of lubricant should be used on all moving parts? Do areas coming in contact with balls need lubed as well?

Thanks to this great community for the help! I look forward to posting progress pics (and more questions) in the future!

    WELCOME!!!

See if this thread helps with posting pictures.. (2mb size limit per pic)

Sorry, I'm not much help with vintages!!

To play you need at least 1 sheet of glass or plexi on the inside..If you want authentic then use two pieces of glass.. Some people use plexi on the inside to quiet the machine a little or if they don't like balls hitting glass noises, and some people that like glass on the inside put plexi on the outside to make it a little safer with little kids playing!!

ill wait for pics before making any guesses

glass or plexi is a personal choice.. just make sure if you use plexi in the inside track is is stiff enought to not bend away from the playfield..

Hey guys- l downsized my photos and now am able to upload. First pic is the overall shot of the front of the machine, and the second is the part that I am having trouble with. I can't find an edit post option for the thread so a reply will have to do.

Nice machine! I like the center feature--if I'm guessing right, there are different results depending on if the ball goes in the cup or next to it...

Anywho--the second picture is of a blocking mechanism, the forks of which are already bent back on your example. The forks originally were bent more or less 90 degrees so that they would block the ball paths once that part was rotated. You can bend them back if you are a purist, or just leave them alone. As that part is right now, it won't hurt anything.

You are missing the track cover, and that can cause problems with balls jamming as they try to reload the jackpot mechanism. You might find a spare for sale or a 3D printed replacement--they have those for the very common Nishijins which often go missing, not sure about your model. A simple cardboard cover could easily be fashioned that would work.

All in all looks pretty good!

Thanks all for the input! This machine is incredibly intriguing to me! I didn't know that it should have a track cover, but it makes sense. The balls jam up pretty easily, especially around the bend in the chute (where the metal fork should be). Do the top and bottom areas get covered, or just the bottom? I've been looking everywhere for replacement parts, but have come up empty so far. Are there suppliers of 3D printed parts? I can rig something up no problem, but I'd like to give this machine the royal treatment.

I'm not sure how the different jackpots pay out quite yet. I haven't been able to fully test it with the ball jamming issue!

I plan on doing a fairly extensive restoration on this machine as soon as the major issues are sorted out. I will make sure to create a new thread documenting my progress!

Here is a pic of the area in question. I'm going to try a temporary cardboard cover to see if it helps, but I am more concerned that the balls get jammed at the bend. Cutting some cardboard now!

your missing the center piece of the "bend"

the balls should never be stacked up "balled up" in the bend like that... if it were mine i would make one from metal or plexi and extend it into the "bend" so the balls roll on top and under it and keep them in single file as they travel threw the bend...

    hope that makes sense

No sorry, but there not to hard to make. Cut a strip to width, heat and make the bends then cut to length for a nice snug fit.

Agreed. You may want to take off that piece and see what's going on there. Here is what it should look like.20200222_140457-1.jpg

Mine looks very similar, but doesn't have the molded parts to control ball flow in the bend. The mold is smooth, so it doesn't appear to have any molded pieces broken off. Obviosuly something is missing though. Mine must be a different variation, but I can't figure out what exact piece is missing!

This is my plan if I can't find a part. I have no experience with fabricating my own plastic/metal parts though. Makes me really appreciate how truly rare a working machine is. There are plenty of non-working units out there, but having a well-functioning unit displayed is a real treasure!

go to your local ace true value home depot kinda place and get a piece of aluminum.. it cuts easy and files without allot of effort.. you can bent it with simple pliers.. they usually come on 4 foot sections so you have plenty to make it work for ya.. start long and sneek up on it to make it right..

it will take time but should be pretty easy with some basic tools
