Default First Modern machines - sound question

I just bought my first 2 modern pachinkos, a Thunder Dragon Z and a Ranma 1/2. The Thunder Dragon is a normal machine, the Ranma is cyclic. They came with one battle counter that looks like it was attached to Ranma. From what I can gather so far, I think they use the Sankyo Evol frame.

Plugged in and they both powered up and lit up, some things started moving. I've only tried the Thunder Dragon so far but I notice that neither of the machines plays any sound at all. When playing the Thunder Dragon, it shoots balls as it should and pays out occasionally, though I don't really know what I am doing as yet. No sounds either on any payouts. I assumed something had broken or come disconnected but upon opening the playfield door, a Japanese woman started yelling at me really loudly :-) Thus, I can tell the audio amp, speakers and volume pots seem to work fine.

Is there anything that needs done to enable sound in some way? Could game sound have been turned off in software?

Thanks in advance for any insight! Quite different than my old 1970s Nishijin-B! More questions to follow, I'm sure, as I get them going.

Have you gotten a ball into or dropped a ball in one of the "1" or "2" pockets at the bottom?? If so do lights flash and stuff?? There should be some noise then.. Pachinkos can be pretty quiet to start with.. There usually won't be any sounds until you start getting balls in certain pockets..

I thought the evol frame had volume built onto the joystick. but that it always defaults to high on power up?
Have you tried moving the joystick to see if any messages appear?

Again, they can be pretty quiet until you get the centre hole.

Thanks guys. I had assumed there would be some sort of background sound track or music but it sounds like it's more scoring based. I will play around some more today and see what I can come up with.

As a follow-up, I did indeed have to hit some scoring to start the sound. I do have good sound on Ranma. It's a bit too quiet, even with the pots turned up, so I think the pots are too large a resistance. On Thunder Dragon, the pots are just flaky and need to be replaced. If I fiddle with them just so, I can get sound from it. Their value seems about right so I'll order 4 good high-quality pots of that value.

When getting. bare in mind the wattage. standard 1/4 (250Mw) will blow.

Unfortunately the joystick volume control is disabled on both of these hanemono cells. I have both and neither can adjust the volume, works fine on Battle of Vader and Fever Shinkagetsu cells though.

Only Ranma 1/2 has music when playing all the time, not just during scoring/fever; but you have to be in “female mode” (hit the chance button)

Really? I don't recall mine doing that, although it does change gender correctly, as far as I can tell. I'll have to go have a closer listen.

Is there a general recommendation for the volume control pots, i.e. ohms and wattage rating? I'll look at the ones I have, but might be nice to know if those are near-correct anyway.
