    Smile Nishijin crooked key solution

I've found a key blank that works in the Nishijin "crooked key" locks (with a little trimming, of course):
key blank.jpg It's a Schlage SC6. Even though Schlage doesn't make this kind of lock anymore, it was common enough that a lot of locksmiths still have a few of these blanks on-hand. Here's the info on it from Ilco:
    ilco info.jpg
As you can see, the key's profile (the thick black squiggle beneath the key representing the key's shape when viewed head-on) is what made me think of it.
I removed and disassembled the lock, like so:
    lock exp.jpg
As you can see, the mechanism is a simple lever lock.
I used the lock cylinder to fine-tune the blank. In order to get the blank to fit, you'll need to shave down one edge, specifically the top edge (when it's oriented to go in the lock). One (literal) snag I ran into is that there's a little bump in the keyway that made me shave a little more off of the top edge of the key until it was practically to the edge of the profile contour:
    lock snag.jpg
But once I got the key into the cylinder, it was an easy matter to mark the parts of the key that extended outside the cylinder in order to cut off a few millimeters from the end, put a notch next to one shoulder, and cut the bottom edge off of the tip. Like so:
    key cuts.jpg(not to scale)
Until you end up with something like this:
    key cut.jpg
    And it works!

I don't know if other locks will be the same, but both levers on my lock were the same size and didn't necessitate any adjustment to the bottom edge of the key (that engages the levers and latch).

If you’re genuinely interested, I can cut one from my template and send it — gods willing the levers aren’t different...

Just for clarification, this is the keyway/keyhole I’m referring to:
