tried the cotton balls and it worked.
first i put in 5, was too loud, then 8 was good but the sound was bad. so i took 3 out, too loud but the sound was ok. then 6 too loud,, 7 too loud, 8 a bit better and this time with better sound. so i stayed on 8. a little to loud but ok.
this will do till i get the volume controls, but no hurry.

my older son loves it. grouped all his toy dinos around the machine an played for an hour (till i send him to bed).
my other son loves it too, but with 11 month i think you like everything which is lound and colorfull
