I just got my “charge 2” notification for several items and one full pachinko: one early modern arepachi (23kg weight) in box #1; one Felix the cat Lumina cell and 5 assorted toy pachinkos in box #2 (17 kg). Just under 45,000 yen for international Fedex economy shipping for both packages total. So goes to show the prices don’t get too crazy till you start dealing with shipping these newer 50+ kg phone booth sized behemoths that get broken up into 2 boxes.

Default Record for highest shipping through From Japan

I just got my charge 2 notification for a Lupin the third Fujiko edition; I decided to take a chance on FromJapan since JT Comatz quoted me $630 to ship (+$300 for actual machine). This is a big bulky machine (48 kg 93x68x56 cm) I found that the abnormally large 68cm width drastically affects Fedex shipping rates; $1250 for priority, $822 for economy, $535 for DHL. Obviously I will choose DHL

If I play with the shipping calculator and put in 93x56x56 (subtracted 12 cm from width measurement, ) cost goes down drastically to $300-$350 range for FedEx options; DHL went down a bit to the $400 range. Adding to the 93cm length didn’t affect the price much.

So, lesson learned is FedEx quotes can be really crazy if you go over a certain threshold; which some of the oversized pachinkos will cross. Maybe the $630 quote from JT wasn’t so crazy after all! (JT uses FedEx) Regardless, the cost of the machine is way cheaper via Yahoo auctions ($103) vs $300 at JT, and shipping is $95 cheaper.

Hopefully this will be helpful to others interested in importing a bulky newer pachinko.

I received my Fujiko edition Lupin machine, I double checked their measurements and they were pretty accurate. I’ve noticed this before but can confirm with “proof” that they do re-box the pachinko after they receive it, not unlike Russian nesting dolls. So it comes to them in a box not much bigger than the pachinko; then they put that box in 2 more boxes surrounded by bubble wrap. There’s 2 reasons to do that:

    1. Ensure pachinko is well boxed/packed for its long journey; reducing chances of damage and potential shipping loss claims.

    2. Greatly increasing shipping/repacking costs (and presumably FromJapan profits) by going over the threshold for large bulky items that results in sky high shipping quotes.

I can’t prove #2; but it leaves open the possibility. I personally don’t mind paying a bit more for good packing; but when it means triple the normal rate it’s kinda nuts! Anyhow, I have no complaints as machine came in 1 piece and is awesome!

I like the label that says don't plug it directly into the wall!

I know ditto! That warning should be made into a sticky for yahoo auctions section for the uninitiated! That seller (it was sold directly from a parlor) must have dealt with a few newbs asking why their machine started smoking and didn’t work when plugged into a wall socket!
