    Default Restoring metal door frame

The metal door frame on my 1969 Nishijin single shot is... well, shot. I'd hoped that I could remove the surface rust, polish, and be in pretty good shape. But the chrome (or is it nickel?) plating is flaking off in big chunks.

I'm looking for some affordable ways to address this. I found this thread on re-chroming that mentions a few options including a shiny silver powder coat. But most of the links in that thread are broken.

So I thought it might be worth starting a new thread. I gather a lot of people don't bother and just get a good door off a donor machine. Pachinkos are super common around me, so I don't think that's a good option.

Suggestions? What have you done that worked?

easier... no never. to re chrome it ya drop it at a chrome shop and they do the work.. ya can't do chrome at home..

powder coating like that take time and practice or drop it at a shop and have them do the work.. but powder coating it will be allot less monies

Here's an update. I called around and asked friends for recommendations of where to go for either chrome plating or powder coating. The short answer was every place that was any good was at least an hour away. None would give me even ballpark estimates without seeing the parts in person.

So I decided to take a chance on some spray paint. I had really low expectations here. I thought it was at least worth trying and figured anything I did would be easily undone.

    First a before pic.

Initially all my metal frame pieces looked like this. After cleaning with some naval jelly and steel wool I got this.

The main part of the frame looks pretty good. But the other pieces, not so much. Almost all the plating is flaked off and there's some pretty stubborn rust.

So I bought some Rustoleum silver metallic spray paint at the local big box hardware store. I used a wire brush in my handheld drill to remove the remaining plating and the most stubborn rust. This also helped rough up the bare metal a little. Then I sprayed a couple light coats of spray paint.

Like I said, I had low expectations. But boy was I surprised!

    Here's the after photo:

In the middle is that main piece of the frame (unpainted, just cleaned up). To the left and right are the spray painted pieces that looked so bad before. Pretty close match!
